I have an X32 Producer and X32 Rack and love them for live work. I run them both with Sonar via USB and they are pretty solid.

For studio work I am not a huge fan, but then the X32 was not designed with this in mind.. Latency is not great, and as a controller I find the layout and function assignments on the Producer awkward.

Brilliant piece of kit for live gigs though:)

X32 Producer + X32 Rack + S16 and love them, too ... use them mostly for live gigs - brilliant with the P16 monitoring stuff + in-ears BTW ...

did some "live" recordings of a brass orchestra plus rock band just using the X32 + and my win8 tablet ... worked like a charm ...

wouldn't use it in the studio, though, as it only goes up to 48 kHz ... and not a great DAW controller, either ... in ft very limited / unsatisfactory Mackie control only last time I checked but supposedly there were some improvements with the latest firmware (which I have not tried as I have better controllers around) ...

I feel sorry for my UFX.  ;)

You shouldn't. I use both the X32 and UFX and for my money the UFX is far superior in the studio. Having both ticks all the boxes:)

yeah, the sample rate is a kicker for sure. The Midas Board has the upgraded preamps with the higher sample rate and price tag.

No plan to sell the UFX yet. :)

The X32 has great architecture and sound IMO, BUT the desk is flimsy and you need to be very careful how you handle it unless you want busted faders and knobs. Get a decent flight case if you're going to travel much with it. Vacuum it after every gig.

There are plenty of them out in my area, but few of them last in the hands of young engineers.

Enjoy the desk!

Gary, can you reply in my other post about setting up the X32 as a controller?

I'm not sure about where your 'other post' is, and I don't exactly know what you're asking.  I'll start with the generic basics, and then you can point me to where your interest actually is:

Depending on how the ASIO driver sees the X_UF Firewire or USB interface, that will be one of the MIDI interfaces shown in the SONAR menus under the Preferences >> Control Surfaces. Choose it, select Mackie Control, push the Remote button on the X32, and it should spring to life.

The assignable controls on the X32 can be coordinated with the little Mackie utility that's included with SONAR. I put the jog wheel on one of the rotary controls, and the transport controls on some buttons. I also put the red 'overs' reset on a button. I mostly use the job wheel and reset function buttons, and of course the volume fader function to get a mix into initial balance.  I've had no interest in getting plugins or the ProChannel to work from any control surface other than a touch screen.

I am reviving this old thread to clean up loose ends because of yesterday's breakthrough.

I finally was able to get bus control working in SONAR via my X32.  The Mackie Control protocol uses MIDI Notes to do practically everything.  Switching between Main, Track, and Bus is accomplished with MIDI Notes 81,76, and 80, respectively.

Once I found that the X32 'Setup' screen had to have 'MIDI Control Interface' enabled on the 'Remote' tab, then the user Assign controls work as they should, and MIDI Notes (and MIDI CC) can be sent via buttons or encoders.  This is a tremendous help to my workflow plans, and I hope others who have been stuck with Track-Only function can benefit from this tidbit.

I'd been looking at the Midas board but while it has the better preamps 96khz recording has still not been implemented. That's why I dropped it off my shopping list.

Yes, I find it strange that not only the X32/M32 family hasn't gotten the 96kHz bump, but most of the competitors' products announced since then in the $3k to $5K range are also 'limited' to 48kHz.

I'd love to get beyond speculation and understand the engineering or marketing issues that make it so.

I've also been waiting for at least 88.2 kHz to show up on X32/M32.  All I've got is speculation, but I'd speculate that, when the rubber hit the road, their CPU didn't have the beef to clock everything through at that speed and still work reliably...without a hardware change.
