They recorded pianos at half-speed and then played them back at normal speed. The flipped tapes over and played them in reverse. They cut up tapes and spliced them back together again. They took LSD.
You bet they'd have used VSTs and VSTis if it had been an option.
Now, I doubt they'd have had 15 EQs and 27 compressors and 6 limiters and 9 reverbs. They got too much done in too short a time to have had that many distractions.
