I only heard a snippet in the car this AM, but I had just watched youtube vids of Curtis, and then Jeff & Rod.
The chord progression was identical or really really close. It has almost the same tempo as well. Now I have to research the web to find this tune. Unless one of you is up on identifying country songs with not title or artist.....

chord progressions themselves are not a sole consideration for copyright.

I-V-vi-IV is in hundreds of "hit" songs.

that chord progression originated in Pachelbell's Canon in D.

What's the betting it had been used before that. 😁

I wonder if Pachelbel's descendants have considered the potential for a monetary windfall. I'm sure there's some sleazebag entertainment lawyer in Los Angeles that'd take their case.

Oh yeah, that song is definitely a ripoff of "People Get Ready". If you played just those first chords to 100 people, 99 of them would start singing "People Get Ready". The remaining 1 would be somebody too young to have heard of Curtis Mayfield.

Hi,

There is no chance, that anyone is not going to say that something comes from something else, and is now considered a rip off. With music recorded and records kept for the last 100 years, we will find even more stuff that is the same.

Pretty soon, even Tangerine Dream ripped off Bach, since the same "notes" were played, but the accents and effects were so heavy going around, that no one could even conceive of that idea or concept.

It's not about the stealing of the notes ... since we were all born with them around us ... it's about the music ... and since we're only concerned with one bit ... I guess that everyone rips off everybody! Cue the guitar, and the vocals ... here comes the bridge and then the solo! Wanna talk about even more rip-offs? How about the constant copy of the song format!

That's even more tiring than the same chord progression or set of notes!
