The Maillard Reaction

OK, this is serious.

The new room is finished to the point where I am thinking about getting a house coffee maker for casual entertainment of guests.

I want something that makes a whole pot drip style. I want that for convenience and so that I don't have to spend much time making coffee.

I have espresso and french press stuff for my enjoyment etc. but for this I'd like something that just made lots (or pots) of coffee available for guests and such over in the other building.

It seems like a great removable filter and super easy clean up is what I am looking for.

I seem to like the metal filter assemblies rather than the plastic ones with the metal screens. But that's just an impression of what I encounter when I travel and get put up at rentals... I haven't shopped yet or checked out which coffee maker brand is doing what.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.

mike

Thank you.

I like those a bunch... but for the music area I want the process to seem less dramatic.

I don't want grabbing coffee to seem like yet another decision making process when I want to encourage guests to focus on the music decisions... if that makes any sense?

mike

I have a coffee maker that brews small pots. A few cups, mostly since my wife doesn't drink coffee in the mornings.

It has one of those filter baskets but, I started using the small filters since cleaning it out is a real PITA trying to get the grounds out of the built in basket/filter.

I'm thinking most of the larger brew stations with the paper filters would be as easy as anything else.  It only takes a short time to set up a new brew and a few seconds to dump the old one in the trash.

The Keurig would however, allow your clients to brew one cup of their choosing when they wanted it.  IMHO< that would be the best solution for the widest variety of tastes. One can have a dark roast, another decaf, and the next can have some sort of flavored concoction.

I typically just use my dirty underwear ... and I re-use them several times.  Also, it adds an earthy or brown note to the coffee.

For time sake-I LOVE the Bunn my wife found.

It will make a full pot in about 2-3 minutes.

As far as cleaning, we just add a 1/2 cup of vinegar when it starts slowing down making, let it sit for a little bit and then cycle about 8 pots of water through it and its back to new.

You can add one of those metal reusable filters to it but if it was just going to be a casual here and there thing, Id stick with the paper filters.

The water tank stays on keeping the water warm at all times so I guess this is how it makes it so fast.

This is the one we went with

Here in Michigan all the other brands make it about 4-6 months before our water destroys them.  The Bunn is on its 3rd year and going strong

I used to have a coffee maker with a reusable filter, but went back to a basic Black and Decker with a paper filter.  In the end, you had to throw out the grounds anyway, it was just as easy to throw the paper filter with it and was easier to rinse out.

Mine is a pretty basic unit but has a programable timer.  I set it up the night before and when I come out of the shower in the morning....smell of coffee awaits me.

Thanks everyone.

FWIW one reason I like the paper less idea is that I always toss the grounds out in the garden. The paper doesn't/would't hurt anything but I've been paper less with my espresso and french press for so long I don't really want to start adding paper remnants in the garden.

My mom has one with a reusable filter - never cared for the taste of the coffee (using the same coffee as I do).  I also have one of the afore-mentioned Bunn's that hold water all the time and can brew a pot in 2-3 minutes - love it!  (I'm on my third, I've been using these for many years.)
