What adjustments do I need to make to my system setup so that I can hear my electric guitar coming through TH3 before recording or during recording? I have tried changing my settings on my Focusrite software mixer but no joy.
 
I have my electric guitar plugged straight through my Focusrite Clarett audio interface into Sonar. I have TH3 insert on an audio track and I can hear the guitar from my monitors and there is a signal registering on the audio track. After I have recorded electric guitar I can play back and hear the TH3 processed sound ok.

It sounds like you have input echo disabled. That allows you to hear track processing coming from SONAR from a live input.

I'm curious about this process as well. I'd like to hear an effect as I'm tracking (for example, say, a reverb on a vocal or running a guitar through an amp sim), but not necessarily record the effect as part of the performance. I just want to hear it as I sing/play for the "feel."

Do I simply turn on input echo as well for this desired outcome? Thanks much!

Another question: I find there is a small delay between me picking the note and hearing it - is that normal? Is there a way to remove this?

That delay you hear is latency.  You can change the latency in your Focusrite settings.  Use the lowest setting possible, like 128 or 256, and you should be good to go.

Hi Lynn, thanks for your reply. In Sonar Preferences I've tried it as low as I can go at 16 samples, 0.4 msec. Total round trip is 3.8 msec, 166 samples. I still have a small delay.  I don't see anywhere in Focusrite Control (software mixer) where I can change the samples setting.

When you're in Preferences, are you going into the ASIO panel to change your settings?  If so, 16 samples shouldn't give you any latency at all.  
 
Here's what your manual says about latency:  A note about latency You will probably have heard the term “latency” used in connection with digital audio systems. In the case of the simple DAW recording application described above, latency is the time it takes for your input signals to pass through your computer and audio software, and back to you. Latency is rapidly becoming a problem of the past; the Thunderbolt™ interface used by your Clarett 4Pre is much faster than the USB or FireWire interfaces you may have used previously. As a result, you will nearly always be able to monitor your recordings through your DAW without noticing latency. There is a possible exception to this: when you need to set the recording buffer size to a high value – this may be necessary when you are recording overdubs on a particularly large project, with many DAW channels, including software instruments and FX plug-ins. To overcome this, Focusrite Control gives you the option of sourcing your monitor feed directly from the Clarett 4Pre’s inputs.

When you record audio with FX in the FX Bin you're not actually recording the FX you're just recording the dry signal and that dry signal is being fed through the FX Bin. If you wanted to record WET but end up with a DRY track you would simply delete the FX after recording.

Brilliant, I found the solution by clicking PDC. Thanks again everyone. Everyone's answers helped me narrow things down In the past I have recorded electric guitars by mic on a guitar amp. This is the first time trialing the guitar through a plug in.
