who didn't care and still don't care about Back to the Future? My browser is filled with it - even Amazon is celebrating the (as far as I'm concerned, pitifully mediocre) movie.

When and how did it become such a cult movie, anyway? Are there any other reasons besides the fact that my generation, having suddenly crossed the big 40, is suddenly prone to nostalgia, so that even the most mediocre film is an object of cult?

Well, here's more from Uncle Uncool...

- I don't like bacon (as a matter of fact, I don't eat pork).
- I don't speak "même".
- I despise American Horror Story. With a passion.
- Game of Thrones bores me to tears.
- The Walking Dead is slowly but certainly falling in that same category.
- I don't think Dave Grohl is the messiah.
- I don't even think Dave Grohl is the coolest person on earth.
- Dave Grohl isn't even the coolest ex-Nirvana member.
- I'm a grammar Nazi. Don't like it? Learn to spell and then you can tell me all about it.
- I haven't seen/read LOTR - and I like it like that.
- I haven't seen Braveheart - but I can't stand Mel "Little Führer" Gibson.
- I love America.
- I can't stand most superhero movies.
- NO BACON! EVER!
- I don't care for the new Star Wars.
- But I LOVED Episode I-II-III. Yes, even Phantom Menace.
- I don't give a X about Harry Potter.
- I don't play video games of any kind.
- Kubrick's 2001 bored me - to death!
- I can't stand JJ Abrams and I can't forgive him & how he violated Star Trek.
- I love to read scriptures (even as an unbeliever). I've just finished the JPS Deuteronomy and thought it was fascinating.
- As far as classical music, anything written after 1850 is most likely too modern for my taste. I'd actually prefer before 1800...
- I hate everything Quentin Tarentino has directed after Pulp Fiction.
- I can't say that I like Pulp Fiction or Reservoir Dogs. But that's another story.
- I hate IPA and I don't care for PBR.

And on, and on, and on...

And NO BACON. Ever.

Oh well...

I like some of the things on your list and can't stand others.  Seems you and I have unique tastes, which can probably be said about just about every other person on the planet.

You are dead wrong about bacon and pork in general.

As far as grammar goes, there are a lot of wannabe grammar leaders out there.  "Grammar Nazi" is a first order cliche.  Nobody is a leader without followers.  Speaking of cliche, I do have my own OCD tendencies to deal with, so I understand.

IPA is another fad I don't understand either.  There is nothing balanced about IPA, and it's ALL about balance.

Dry hopping is the devil's work.

Scripture?  An interesting sub-genre of fiction, but I prefer straight up SciFi.

I'm with you on most of that.....

the exceptions being Bacon/pork and the walking dead....oh, and I have seen Braveheart.... pretty decent movie.
And last but certainly not least.... Man I LOVE America.... not what it's becoming but what it used to be and hopefully, for my kids and grand-kids sake, will be again.

As long as this immigrant can be part of it... ;)

I may be a newly arrived American, but I seem to mostly be an old school one. I landed here in the wrong century.

As far as I'm concerned, as long as you have legal status you are a VERY welcome addition to our culture.

Absolutely.... I have no problem with those who come in through the front door legally, learn the language and customs, and assimilate into the culture of the country. That is what has made this nation the best one on the planet.

MY problem is with those who come here by other means and with other intentions, don't want to learn the language or customs, and want to transform this bastion of freedom into the repressive third world kind of place they just left.

...

Braveheart is not bad ... but it suffers from the Hollywood star thing ... it would have been better with an unknown at the lead, but then ... no one would see it!

Mel is OK ... but his best role? A sniff'eo in a German film at the end right after the credits! That film only showed at Film Festivals, and was called "Knocking on Heaven's Door" ... and that ending bit was priceless! The film was even better! Great version of the song by a band called ZELIG, too!

2001, for today's standards is not a good film, and suffers from the pangs of romantic illusions BADLY. But I think that it was more about Kubrick wanting to do something he had seen, than it was supposed to be "meaningful", because in the end, that film is about nothing for me and some over rated ideas and concepts and people mangle a story out of it ... we can't even do that about monkeys and dinosaurs!

Pulp Fiction is a second rate copy of the original films by Jean Luc Godard, and it is just too bad that most folks do not have the patience to sit through Jean Luc's craziness and stunts and insane quasi-philosophies on top of anything else. Godard is fun to watch because you have no idea what's next. PF is just a stoned American show-off film, as is almost all of Quarentino's stuff.  I can actually see why a rocker/musician would not like Godard ... because it works on making sure that everything is messed up, and there is no story many times, and this is a part that we have a hard time with. His speaking over it all the time, can be even more annoying but half the time its out of whack and funny! Try that in music!
