I remember seeing Phil Collins and really liking him...when he was a drummer! The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway tour was great. Then Peter left. The next two tours were very good. Then Steve left. Then a lot of POmPosity ensued. Never got to see Peter solo, but did get to see Steve a couple of times. He was smokin'-good.

But Phil Collins THE former Genesis FRONT man? Blah. [This is a family-friendly forum after all.]

He served best when he served from the back.

I discovered Genesis with Genesis, Abacab and Duke, and for me, that was Genesis for a long time. Not being much of a prog rock fan, I never really got into the older stuff, though I was obviously familiar with it. Last year however, I bought a Trick of the Tail on an impulse, and I actually quite like it. Maybe it'll be the gateway to the rest of the stuff.

As for Collins solo... His music remains associated with what they used to call "contemporary adult music", which was one of the biggest turn off imaginable as a label. And I always thought the label was appropriate in his case, even if I respect his accomplishments.

Most of us are only retired until the money runs out. Famous entertainers are apparently only retired until they feel the need for one more round of adulation. Is it possible to love to do music without needing to be loved for your music?

I've never understood the animus towards Phil. Self evidently a talented drummer and singer he never veered off into true "artsy fartsy" land and made music that was accessible to most around the globe and, as far as I can tell, had a positive message. Perhaps one might compare him to the pop cultural icons of today...say, Niki Minaj...and rethink this misguided animosity. Or not.

I saw Genesis in 1973 and my applause is the main feature of the subsequent live at Leicester de Montfort theatre..........

However talented he may have been, his voice and that bloody track In the Air Tonight certainly grate and the hackles rise etc.

Trying to be the jack of all trades (Led Zeppelin, Clapton, Mr Liveaid etc) was also a no no (for me).

But yeah, he's a good, not excellent, drummer and his motown covers were ok. Its just that i hate that song about the air tonight.......

Cheers,
Jerry

I am a complete fan of Genesis, with and without Phil. I've also supported all of them in their solo careers. I've probably seen more of Peter Gabriel than the rest. What can you say about these guys that would be bad? They're all great musicians and road warriors. I'm delighted that Phil is going to have another chance to do what he loves and provide some new music. He's a multi-dimensional entertainer.

You can't not respect him while listening to "Mama."
