So many great suggestions, thanks!

But I don't have much free time for experimentation, so does anybody know if Relayer allows parallel delay lines and feedback between them? I couldn't see anything like that in the video or the manual. Failing that, the Fabfilter Timeless 2 looks like it can do almost as much.

Those aren't cheap though, and in the short term, I'm quite tempted by the Tritik or the Valhalla as cheaper alternatives. ValhallaRoom is my go-to reverb so I'm surprised I missed that they had a delay too.

I love Sigmund, even though I almost always use something less capable.  For the price, when on sale, it's probably the most delay-bang-for-the-buck you'll find.  It's routinely available on sale for ~ 55 bucks.

Echoboy is quite pricey, but last summer it could be had for 99 bucks.  Maybe with Black Friday around the corner ...

You can't go wrong with Fab Filter, but sales are infrequent.  Timeless 2 was actually about half price at one point, something you almost never see Fab Filter do.  This was right around the time that D16 Group release Sigmund.  Coincidence?

Oh yeah, you should also definitely consider Melda Production MMultiBandDelay.  When on sale (it is as of today but I don't know how much longer), it's only $27 USD.  Very good value at that price, IMO.

Do you have the full version of Reaktor? If so, there are delays of every kind in the Reaktor User Library, ranging from straight ahead echo to full-on insane wackiness with everything in between. Boscomac's Reaktor delays are superb, you can find them here:

I'm a huge fan of his Inity dub delay, guitar heaven!

Another great free Reaktor one is WabbelEcho, you get some amazing sounds out of that. Especially out-there on vocals.

I have most of the above mentioned delays. And I have favorites for certain kind of tasks. But for me finding just one to fit the bill is very much like finding a guitar that "speaks" to you. And, at least for me, that would be Relayer. It is moron proof and has killer features. Do yourself a favor and watch Dan Worrel's overview of it on YouTube.

Man I need to make more use of those Boscomac delays, they're just nuts. Have a listen to the demos of the Bouncing Ball delay, in particular the last one entitled "Guitar - Analog Behavior" - wacky enough for ya? LOL!

A very versatile delay with some excellent routing capabilities is Rob Papen's RP-Delay:
"can be routed in a number of ways to create various distinct delay models: mono, stereo, dual stereo, channel split, split multi, serial multi, parallel multi, full serial, and reverse."

It has a huge amount of control over Trigger, Envelope/LFO, Modulator, & Sequencer.....+ 5 huge banks of presets.

A highly underrated Delay and if you like to have complete control, this is it.......also as a bonus, it includes RP-Verb.

I'm in the market for a new delay/echo VST and would like to hear your recommendations.

What I already have:
Bootsie NastyDLA - This is my workhorse delay. Unfortunately it's 32 bit but it's good in most other regards.
BT Oilcan Echo - no tempo sync, no useful documentation.
BT Tempo Delay - has tempo sync but not much in the way of character or other settings.
NI Replika - has saturation and does okay on guitars, but is a bit sparse in terms of other settings.

What I'd like to see is some or all of this:
  • 64 bit architecture
  • Stereo capability with cross-feedback, ping-pong, etc
  • Complex timing possibilities (eg. multi-tap, random delay times, etc)
  • Tonal 'character' (eg. saturation, phaser, chorus, whatever)
  • High pass/low pass on the wet signal
  • Tempo sync
Soundtoys Echoboy looks like a good contender, although it is fairly pricey. What else would people recommend, if anything?

Based on your criteria, I would think Eventide's H3000 would satisfy all those in one plugin. For pure delays, you can't go wrong with HDelay, Echoboy, Imperial and so on. Some, like Timeless, add modulation as well. H3000 throws everything into a single plugin. Not saying it is any better, just that it does meet your list.

Regards,
Dan
