How do you like that Kemper? I may upgrade to that or an Axefx in the future.

Hi Clint, and incidentally, I'm with you 100% on your wasp-genocide policy - I hate the bloody things

As to the Kemper, I'm absolutely loving it! They're a bit pricey, but for what it can do, there's nothing out there that really compares. It comes with a load of pre-installed rig profiles, and there are hundreds more available to download for free on the User's 'Rig Exchange' area of the Kemper website. There are also an increasing number of professionally produced profiles for sale. As it happens, the rig I recorded this song with was a paid-for option (see my reply to Mike above for all the details) - and it was only £5!

I can't offer an opinion on AxeFx, but I've got a feeling that there are some AxeFx user profiles available that members have created by mic-ing up a cabinet and feeding the profiling signal through some of their amp models.

@ Robby, Mike, Wook, Al

Hey guys, thank you so much for the technical advice, especially with regard to the vocals.

As well as being the first time I've recorded with my mate Sid, it's also the first real opportunity I've had to mix a song with a vocal track. So I'm really grateful for all the specific advice you're giving me.

Robby, that's my mate Sid doing the singing, and I'm not sure when we'll get a chance to re-record, but in the meantime I'll certainly try the doubling idea that you and some of the other guys have mentioned.

I feel I'm getting there with the backing tracks (as per the VeRy MeTaL stuff I occasionally do with Troy), but I really am a complete novice at the vocal stuff. So, once again guys, many thanks for the indispensable help.

Steve,

Sounds good to me.   Never heard the original but enjoyed your version.   Guitars sound really good.  LVox could maybe be a tad brighter but good nonetheless.

Hey Steve, like the song. I like the spread on the guitars. Vox sound good too. I still think there's a bit too much compression on the drums though. They're kinda pumping still. But that's only my opinion. Still a good job though!

The Band19
This is sounding better, and it feels a little more dynamic, but I would push those vox a bit harder in the mix. And as Mr. no999 commented, you may want to brighten this a little as well. But they still feel buried (to me) like they are fighting w/the guitars and the toms. If it was an instrumental, put a bow on it... But songs with words are different.

"But"my ears are getting older, along with everything else... Except? Well, you know.

Hey, Steve,

I'm not familiar with the original, and I missed your first mix, but this rockin' cover sounds absolutely FANTASTIC!

Great playing, vocals and production, and that Kemper sounds smokin' hot, brother!

Dynamite cover, Steve, excellent stuff!

Hi guys

I've uploaded REMIX #3 based on the suggestions you've kindly made.

Specifically:
  • Vocals are doubled, nudged, and panned a little apart; I've added a little tape compression to the Vocals bus.
  • Restructured the intro guitar parts.
  • Drum compression tamed.
Thanks again for the input, I really appreciate it

Steve,

The Remix sounds great.   Listened to the original Status Quo version you posted as well.  You certainly captured it well, plus gave it a nice modern edge.   I think it sounds fantastic.

Regards
