Frank, once again, I thank you for your valuable input and time.  As for the beginning, I was trying to do something different than the norm.  I've written so many different starts that I wanted to make this take off right away rather than build it up slowly.  More of a sprint than a long distance race.

Walt, thanks for taking the time to listen and comment.  As I told Frank, I was experimenting with this song just to be different.  I was slightly inspired by King Crimson, who often use poly-rhythmic drum beats over a pop melody.  Often, many of my drum tracks are simplistic because I programmed them myself, but in this case, I used loops from the Pop expansion pack from Superior Drummer.  You are exactly correct that I started with the drums.  You are very astute, and I welcome your $0.02 any time.

Nicely done.  I think I heard a hitch in the voice in the 1st chorus.  But otherwise it sounds good.  The mix is clear, and the song bouncy and infectuous.  What's not to like.

Herb, thanks for dropping by and your kind comments.  It's always good to hear from you.  It's not always easy to write about happiness.

AT, you have very good ears to hear that hitch.  Now that I have the instruments about where I want them, I will go back and redo the lead and harmony vocal until I'm comfortable with them.  I've been singing some since I recorded those vocals, and my voice is stronger, now.  Thank you for your time and comments.

Super song.

Bass seems a bit hot... but I sure like it that way. Background vocals could come up a bit. They are creating a nice texture.

Guitar solo seems just right for the tune. One of the few times I've heard an all too often used *tone* placed in a great context where it really works with the song.

Do you have any other crash cymbals to try?

If I was mixing I'd try to make the main vocal brighter by using a tiny low shelf on the low freqs and maybe search out a range to place a small upper mid range peak for some emphasis as well.

It seems like I could have heard this song on an Adrian Belew album!

Thanks for sharing.

best regards,
mike

Mike, thanks for having a listen and your helpful comments.  I'll be taking these into consideration on the next go round.  I have tons of cymbals, though I just stayed with the default cymbals that came with this particular kit.  I can go brighter, darker, louder, softer, or any number of directions.  You may have heard something like this song on an Adrien Belew album, as he's one of my all time favorites.  I'll try some different settings for the vocals next time.  Thanks again.

I want to thank all who have participated in this production.  I have listened to you and made some major changes.  First, I rerecorded the lead and harmony vocal with a different mic that compliments my voice better, I think.  I changed the melody a little and tightened up the harmony.  To those who wanted more low end, I changed the bass drum sample to accent more thump and less beater.  I appreciate your time.  The new version can be found in my first post and here: :http://www.soundclick.com/player/single_player.cfm?q=hi&songID=12439692

Wow Lynn, this sounds MUCH better to my ears.  The mix is fantastic in terms of relative levels between parts, and I think the new vocals are super.  The rhythm sounds less "caribbean" now, but I like it this way.

The only detraction I'm hearing is clipping, which may be happening at your mastering and/or export stage.  Are you mastering in Sonar, or a separate program?  I'd suggest taking a look at your Sonar Master bus level and make sure it's not clipping before you export, then check your compressor/limiter levels in your mastering program and make sure they're not too aggressively set.

Great work Lynn!
