  • Fast Bounce - Good or not?

I have read/seen videos saying using Fast Bounce when bouncing to tracks is a bad thing and others saying it doesn't change the sound/quality. The Sonar Help Files say it does not degrade the audio. I'm curious about what everybody thinks about this? Any input? Personally, I have always used Fast Bounce and never really thought about it before. Am I missing out on something here?

Hi. I use fast bounce as well, unless I'm using an external insert of some kind. Then real time bounce is the only option.
I haven't done any tests to see if there is any difference, but I can't hear any.
I use it because it saves me time. Simple as that
All the best.

Same here, Zargg. However, now I have reservations about it. I guess I'll have to try it both ways and see if there is a difference. I was hoping others might have already done this and could save me the time.

I'm with Ken.

The only time I've ever done a real time bounce is when using External equipment.

Many soft synth manufacturers actually recommend using Fast Bounce

Its very simple really. Most plugins do not care about the rate at which audio buffers are sent to them to process. i.e. there is no difference in the processing if they process buffers clocked to the audio device as opposed to sending buffers as fast as the plugin can process them. In the latter case were making the most use of the CPU and it automatically throttles to how fast the CPU can process the plugin. Dropouts do not apply in this case so there is no risk of data loss.

The only exception may be certain plugins that rely on external hardware for their DSP or simply plugins that have bugs that get exposed in bast bounce. A long time ago some disk streaming plugins had problems in fast bounce mode but I haven't heard of any of those issues in a long time.

The only time I recall fast bounce being problematic for an in-the-box plugin, was with the very first release of Play 5. That was a Play5 issue and was quickly fixed by EWQL.

I reported a bug (problem reports, problem report email, and defunct problem reporter web page) wherein Sonar creates popping noises with real-time bounce (load balancing enabled) but not in fast bounce (or load balancing disabled).

I've always fast bounced...once I was having trouble with my computer getting overloaded with plugins/processing so I tried real time thinking it would be safer.  Turned out to be the opposite and the above issue is probably why.

Fast bounce and real time produce identical results, even with a large UAD setup (which someone above alluded to regarding additional dsp hardware).  Unless you're moving out into the analog domain using external inserts, anyway you count it.... its all just 1's and 0's
