The Maillard Reaction
oops. Sorry. I guess after I read your comment I kind of heard the drums in my head.

In all honesty, when I was done listening I flashed on the idea that it is sort of tamed down, old timey, Jefferson Airplane thing going on and drums were part of that imagined impression.

The vocals seem beautiful but perhaps emotionally displaced from the vibe of the guitar part.

I never heard the PJHarvey version but I am guessing it's a bit edgier or rev'ed up in feel.

I think I was imagining a bit more edge or drive to serve as a foil to the sweetness of the vocal delivery.

I'm way past my comfort level of commenting on someone else's art. I like to live and let live and try to avoid making suggestions like you should add drums. I wish I'd understood the circumstance better beforehand and I didn't put my foot in my mouth, but I figured I should explain it now that I have. :-)

I'm going to change my mind and say I like it just the way it is for what it is. :-) Bring it on!

all the best,
mike

I understand, Mike.  It was just there was a lot of wondering about the lack in drums in the earlier version, since it is pretty straight ahead rock and roll.  So I was just funning about that.  The PJ version has drums, of course.  My wife (lead vocals) did another version w/ her band and it had drums (and sax).  But she had a guitarist and bassist over for an acoustic gig and they started fooling around w/ a slower version of the song and that is when I broke out the mics.  I thought a stripped down version would work - something a little different.

Thanks for understanding AT.

BTW, the # in the direct link seems to be the problem.

This link works great: https://soundcloud.com/rm101-1/this-is-love

When I click the link from your first post I get a totally different song - I don't think this is your song.  When I click on Mike's link I get your song.  Your link has a "#" which seems to confuse soundcloud.

Soundcloud always seems to do this.  I think the problem is that it is my sub site - so the link syncs to the owner's version of the page. I haven't found a way to get rid of that hashtag w/o putting it in word or something since everytime I just try to edit it I click and go to the song on my Soundcloud.  Sorry about that everyone.

And yea guitartrek, "This is Love" is the second song.  even I manage to finish a song every month or so.  And unless you go pro w/ Soundcloud, you can't move songs higher.  "Under my Spell" is one the singer wrote, but using the same techniques.  That one doesn't have drums either, but bongos.

Lynn
AT, this sounds just great without drums.  The overall feel is kinda retro, which I like.  It's tight and funky, and I would just leave it alone for now.  You may change your mind later, but it stands on its own.

Great arrangement and vocals.  i like the way it builds towards the end.

Thanks Lynn and others for the listen.

Yea, I think I'm finished w/ it.  When you find yourself changing things by 1 db, it is time to print and move on.

I kept waiting for the drums..lol...only because you mentioned it. Doesn't need them really. I liked your tones on both guitars and the panning was perfect. The vocalist reminds me of the girl who sings " Black Velvet" at least I think that's what the song is called, might be wrong.

Is this the last take, or were you thinking of maybe playing with the structure a bit? It sounds good as it is, just curious if this is as far as you intend to take it.

Starise,

Can't take credit for the guitars - big old tube fender tho the Portico II is mine (and the cheapo ribbon).  The singer actually does Black Velvet w/ a live band.  So she'll like the reference to Alannah.

And I'm finished w/ it except for some mastering through outboard.  One more song to put some vocals on and then master them all (sounds like a Tolkien phrase) and the CD is finished.  Famous last words...

Thanks,
