Treefight
I give up. I can't make head or tail of whether/which should be enabled for the best overall PROCESSOR performance, which is where my supposedly super-powerful machine has been getting throttled on medium-sized projects that my five-year old machine handled without breaking a sweat.

I know, generally, what the services do, and I'm looking for what the consensus, if any, as to benefits/detriments of each in a Sonar-dedicated PC, all SSD (OS, audio, samples - actually, I also have two older spinners in their, which are only used for longer term storage, not on active projects). I've done all of the standard audio tweaks - actually the factory did - such as high performance power (customized), disabling USB suspend, blah blah, stuff we've all done forever.

I have an newer i7, 68x series, 3.8 Ghz o/c'd to just over 4 at the factory. I haven't touched the settings. Windows and Sonar are up-to-date. RAM is 64B. Drivers all up to date, including for my Nvidia 1070 8GB - which may play a role because since the update (via Windows, not Nvidia), even the most basic graphics are sluggish (like moving a window across a screen).

I can list all my other specs and details, but frankly, I don't want a "fix," to troubleshoot, or a workaround. I want to know what those with far more knowledge than me are doing, and why.

So, help, please, and thank you in advance.

In device manager, display driver, driver tab, revert the driver to the previous one. I keep a folder with different drivers, the latest isn't necessarily the greatest.

Unknowen
first thing to set, preferences / configure file and set "enableSet Threadideal Prossessing to "false'
check your cpu speed in the task manager under performance.

make Sure you don't have more then one audio device on your system in control panel / device manager. look in two area. one is near the top called Audio input and out put.. delete all audio devices that are not related to your audio interface. then look down the list of devise to find Sound, video and game controller. delete audio devices not related to your audio interface...
Reboot...

What motherboard are you using?
Are you using a usb hub?
BISO may have reset...

Reboot as a rule when something is not working...

Maybe there isn't anything to fix. Are your cores running out of steam?

Meaning, if the CPU is fast enough, it's fast enough. Making it potentially go faster doesn't really buy you anything.

I had a dog we used to call Superfetch...
Also called her "who's got my cap"...she would pick up and run off with anything you set down.
*Other than that useless story, I can offer no help here....😃😃😃😃

Well for one thing, get rid of that Windows updated video driver.
Only use drivers from the manufacturer's site.
See if Nvidia has a clean install option. AMD does, I dont know about Nvidia.
If not, I'd try to download the latest from Nvidia and see if you can completely remove the previous drivers first, instead of "installing over the top".

Best of luck!

Joe A is making a good point.  Go into "processes" and disable "Superfetch".   It can be a resources HOG!

And don't install the whole "GeForce Experience" - just the bare driver!

Disable all automated CPU features in your BIOS like Turbo boost, C states and HPET when possible, otherwise you will have throttling.

Uninstall any unused/unnecessary apps

Find out what is running in the background with Process Explorer

If you use external DSP like UAD cards, that will limit you rendering speeds due to enforced latency
possibly same with up sampling native plugins, although you would think it would just use more CPU.

I have found that Trend antivirus products and various backup applications like EaseUS ToDo Backup can greatly interfere with performance. For antivirus, you should consider excluding audio file directories. Make sure your backups are scheduled for times outside your work hours.

Check that CPU parking is OFF.
