Hey Pedro, eleven years ago, I took bass lessons from a guy named Jay Haser at Five Star Guitars out in Hillsboro.  He also moved up here from So. Cal. where he used to teach at the prestigious Guitar Institute Tech. in Hollywood.  The rates were pretty reasonable (back then) at $18 for a half-hour or $32 for an hour and he may still be around.

I just wanted to learn how to play a bass like a bass player and not a guitarist.  This mainly consisted of refining my timing (from "horrible" up to "pretty bad" ) and using my fingers instead of a pick...

I play Bass with both my fingers or a pick, equally as well. I prefer a pick. The really thick Black Gator picks. I have a very light touch with the pick and I get a very even response, one that does not sound clickie, like I'm playing with a pick. If I want extra growl, I can simply dig in with the pick for instant growl, yet plenty of clearity, and still very even response.

I always find it humorous when people say that a proper Bass player should not play with a pick. Worked well for many of the greatest Bass Players. Hey, Carol Kaye made a nice little portfolio for herself.

I think you mean Carole Kaye.

Ha, yes....you caught it before I could edit it. She may have used the make up, however.

I've always used the Dunlop Standard Nylon 0.88 mm. But I might switch to something sharper.

I use this, and the 0,73 on guitar. I use the 1mm on bass.

I just got turned onto these Dunlop Tortex TIII. They have the Jazz III tip and it gives it that little edge that I wasn't getting from the regular Tortex. Not hard to get used to and very smooth. The .73 work well for soloing and rock chords for me, but I use the .60 for funk and R& B.

thanks guys! I already have more picks than I can go through in 10 lifetimes, but I ordered a few recommended here and digging them. I like Dava picks, and I just picked up some of the gels for the first time and they are wicked good...

3-cornered picks last longer. I use the Gibson ones.
Medium for guitar, hard for bass.

Geeze...as the OP on this thread I had no idea how many different opinions there were regarding plectra. It's been very enlightening. That said I'm taking my godson's advice and switching to Dunlop Primetones 1.0mm sculpted with grip for my electrics and Dunlop Primetones 1.5 mm Triangles for my acoustics...which sort of flys in the face of acoustics needing thinner "floppy" picks...but which I find life alteringly wonderful. YMMV.

Not sure if it was that noticeable, but the picks I mentioned originally (the Dava Control Picks) are called that because you can grip them close and they're hard or back a little and they're flexible.  Kind of the best of both worlds.
