  • Dropouts After Loading a Project or Exporting Audio

Hi all,

I have a rather annoying problem with audio engine dropouts after loading a project or attempting to export audio to a wave file.  Playback doesn't seem to have this problem, which makes it very confusing.  I use 88.2 kHz project settings, and all my bit depth settings are at 64.  I've tried lowering bit depth settings, but it doesn't seem to make a difference.  My audio buffers have been set at 512 and 1024, as well.

Is there anything I should look for that might affect this?  My DAW is loaded with SSDs for the data, audio, and samples drives, as well as 32 GB of RAM and an Intel Core i7-5960X Haswell-E 8-Core 3.0GHz processor.  My audio interface is a Waves DiGiGrid IOS, and all Waves software is current (as well as Sonar Platinum).  I'm using Windows 10 Professional 64-bit (Creators Edition).

I've written support, but their response times are getting worse, and the suggestions they end up providing are not very helpful.  Therefore, I'm hoping someone in the community can help.

Thanks!

Best,
Stephen Salazar

I'm guessing you have a virus scanner that scans new files.

If this is the case, when you export files it will scan them. This means your virus scanner is using the same drive you use for your project at the same time. Once it's done, the resource will free back up.

Just a guess.

Most virus scanners including Windows Defender can be configured to not scan certain file types or file locations.

Probably a good thought.

Hmm, that's not a bad idea.  I'm using Windows Defender on my DAW.  I didn't want to install another scanner that might bog performance down.  I keep everything on my DAW updated, and I don't use it for much internet browsing, other than things related to my DAW, training, or plugins.

I'll look into blocking CWP / WAV files from being scanned.  The dropouts are extremely annoying.

Also there was an issue if your using TTS-1 with 88.2.

I tried excluding anything that I thought would directly affect my DAW in Windows Defender (including my data and samples drives), but that didn't stop the dropouts.  Even stranger was the fact that I froze some BFD 3 drum tracks and could hear the playback but still saw a dropout message.

I don't use TTS-1, but I've often wondered if I am wasting resources trying to use 88.2.

ALL bit depth settings at 64? In Export as well? You can't record higher than 24, anyway. I've thought 64 is used only/mainly in the internal processes.

Yes, and this has been a great source of confusion for me, especially when trying to find any posts explaining why you would configure it this way.  The Cakewalk documentation (at least, the documentation I've found) doesn't make it clear as to how to approach using these settings optimally based on your configuration.  My DAW, plugins, operating system, etc. are 64-bit.  I'm not sure how much bearing this has on anything.

Is there anyone from Cakewalk that can chime in on this post?  I've been finding my support requests have been getting worse in terms of how long it takes for a support rep to get back to me.  It makes me feel like something is wrong internally with their organization at this point in time.  Even at the last few NAMM shows I've been to, there seems to be a sense of indifference with their representation of their product.  As a very long time user of their products, it's starting to leave me feeling like it's time to move on to something else.

don't confuse "My DAW, plugins, operating system, etc. are 64-bit." (aka "x64") with 64bit WAV files, they are unrelated
