  • QuadCurve EQ + PC4K + Console Emulator = SSL 4000 (True or False)

I'm considering buying the SSL 4000 Bundle on sale this month, but it occurs to me that Sonar has some stock plugins right there in the Pro Channel that are designed to emulate.  That has me wondering about the differences and qualities of the plugins.

Your thoughts?

I have not tested the SSL 4000 Bundle yet.

The PC SSL EQ is good & the dynamics aren't bad either.
I prefer the 3rd party models though. I have had the WAVES version for years now, it still sounds & works great on certain material.
I don't care for or use any of the PC consoles though.

Again it all depends on budget & need. Try to demo the Waves & compare if you can.

Carl is giving you some good advice.
IMO, the PC Modules don't even come
close to the Waves SSL, and, if you want
to go the long dollar, the SSL Plugins themselves
found here

after all, no one would know better how to reproduce the sound of their console then the company
themselves, just like Harrison Mixbus...

Well, that's what I was curious about, and that sale price is attractive:)

I have some Waves and IK Multimedia plugins.  On buses, I really like that Waves V Comp and the IK Bus Compressor.

If you have the 2 IK British Channels you're in the ballpark of the SSL as well...used with the
buss compressor, which is also the SSL Buss Comp...

The price for the Waves SSL Bundle is $219 .99 at PluginDiscounts...

I'll throw in a nod for the PC modules.  I have the Waves SSL, and it is wonderful.  That being said, using the console emulation and the PC 4K when set for the same settings as the SSL most people would be hard pressed to tell the difference.  There are certainly people on this forum who could, but in a blind test I would be interested to see who could really differentiate them.  Even then, it is simply a "difference" and not necesarily a better or worse situation.

It is cool to have the Waves, but if you don't have several hundred dollars, consider saving it.  You already own an SSL emulation.  The Waves won't make your mixes magically better.

You may be right that most people might not be able to tell which plugins were used in a typical mix, but ... to my ears, there is a BIG sonic difference between the Waves and Cake SSL emulations.  Not subtle at all -- if you demo them head-to-head, you'll know right away whether the price difference is justified.

Cheers,
Eddie

And therein lies the rub.  I'll have to get a demo and decide.  Thanks for the discussion.
