I use an iPad for live playing every week.  I use Forscore.  I think it costs $4 or something (one time only, no subscription).  you can also purchase a Bluetooth device to turn the pages for you with a foot press (not sold by the same company).

forscore will load pdfs or jpgs or tiffs, etc.  I also loads word documents.

it also connects directly to your dropbox folder so you can share files between band members on dropbox and everyone pull them from that shared folder.

it will also allow you to share setlists with all band members and allow one person to control the page turns for everyone.  but we don't use that feature.  I personally don't want someone else turning the pages for me.

you can add notes to each sheet using your finger or stylus or you can type notes into the page.
there are a lot of features in forscore, very powerful and useful tool

A combination of iOS 9's multitasking and the screen size/cpu of the yet to be released iPad Pro could make the iPad more usable in a live situation than it already is. The big problem with the current range (other than the Air2 with iOS9) is that although they can multitask synths via audiobus you can only access one app at a time.

I agree and I really do want the new iPad Pro, but I have never needed to multitask while playing live.  I only need the one application.
