I am trying to unpack Embertone's Intimate Strings which downloaded as a RAR file.  Any suggestions for opening this (preferably a malware-free free download)?  Might seem simple, but when I search for such a program, I see a lot of potentially adware/malware-bloated options with lots of slick advertising.  Wish is was just a zip file....

Thanks for any suggestions!

I use something called Free RAR Extract Frog.  I have also used 7-Zip in the past.

Just be careful if downloading and installing, as many freeware program installers bundle in other insidious crapware that you can avoid, BUT you MUST read the screens during installation, looking not only for pre-checked boxes where you are authorizing something like Spigot, but they also sometimes have a EULA (end user license agreement) that most folks just automatically click Next for - but in these bundled installers they sometimes show a EULA screen that is actually for some completely other Spigot-like piece of malware.  They get away with these kinds of things because if they pre-check it and you blindly just click Next, you are technically agreeing to the installs, so while they are PUPs (Potentiall Unwanted Programs), they are neither viruses or malware.

It was a lot of typing above, but I am just trying to say that whatever you choose to download and install - just be careful to pay complete attention to what is presented to you for authorization during the installation process. :)

I've used 7-Zip without any troubles at all, but there should be one built into Windows, that I use now with Windows 7.

Have you just tried clicking on the first file and see if there's an option near the top left area that says, 'Extract All Flies'?

I also use 7-Zip the most for this kind of thing.

Hi, all - thanks a ton for the insight.  I didn't notice anything that said "Extract All Files" but I did download RAR Extract Frog, which worked fine for a number of Kontakt instruments that were compressed.  I also ran into a site that will let you download a number of VSTs provided you use 7Zip.  Bob Bone I'm reading the licence agreement and see there are Yahoo services attached to the download.  Anyone using 7zip run into any trouble with these "services" or know of a way to opt out after download?

Looks like this has already been solved, so just tossing in a viable alternative.

There is in addition, WinRar which has the free edition that unpacks rar files, and the paid version that writes to rar files.

I've used the paid WinZip software for years now, which also unpacks rar files and deals with zip files too big for the windows zip manager. Not free however.

+1 on the WinRar.  I use the free version and it works fine.  Just drag, drop and unpack.

WinRAR here as well. The paid version is a bit of a running gag since very few people actually pay for it. Other than that, just has a nag screen but I find it works better for me than 7-Zip did. Both are pretty well known for being great applications though.

I've used the fabulously free 7-zip for years.  Extracted hundreds, often huge, zip and rar files.  Never had a single issue.

And no nag screen.
