Just wondering if any body has used the free Protools?

How much of a cut down version is it. and would it be an 'informative excercise' to play with it for experience - or would it be a waste of time?

16 tracks max. You can record no more than 4 tracks simultaneously.
The songs get saved to the cloud only, not your disk.
You are only allowed 3 songs then you have to erase or pay for more cloud space, but you can save the rendered mixes to disk.

And it would definitely be a place to "start to get familiar" with Pro Tools..

So worth investigating...

are any views like Sv disabled?

I assume If I install axx plugins it will pick them up. - but what about rtas or vsts?

VST's no...RTAS...no....AAX...yes...unless you have a wrapper...

Fortunately most plugins are now AAX

And it's FREE...so if you find it "cumbersome" just get rid of it...

Yeah, definitely install it so you can see how bad it sucks.
I made my first "song" which was only an imported wave file so I could try the included effects, clicked "save" and it took about 10 minutes to save to the cloud.
It kept telling me about the free "Expand II" so I went to the store (right there on the menu bar ) and bought it for $0.00. The download started and after about one hour it still wasn't finished so I gave up and canceled everything. During that one hour my quad core was at 100% on all 4 cores. I have never seen that happen with any software before!
I was actually going to purchase Pro Tools because "everybody uses it". I'm not going to purchase it anymore.
You don't know how good you have it with Sonar until you try someone else's software.

To be fair to Pro Tools, I assume that there is probably an issue with my computer/audio interface that is preventing it from working properly. I probably could contact Pro Tools support and get it straightened out, but I'm not going to.

I tried it yesterday.
Installer required reboot. OK, no problem. First launch: some random error message and it crashed. Second launch: crash again. Third launch: now it worked(!).

Pro Tools Free is practically a launchpad for upgrading and paying $$$.

Most of the free programs are...they give you "just enough" to entice you...
