I edited my message as you were posting Randy to say the same thing about U2 that you did about Vince Gill. So yeah, I agree with you.

I'm not sure I would call Radiohead alternative rock James. I'd say they have much more in common with art rock bands like Genesis and Nectar. Phish and King's X are like that too. At least that's how I view them.

Wow, Nectar! I was in a band that used to play "Magic is a Child". We all loved that song so much. Unfortunatly, the crowd would sit there like chimps staring at a clothes dryer.

I thought so. We probably shouldn't discount the possibility that some of the altrock guitarist won't evolve into different players down the road. Alot of rock and rollers sure have. And other genre's too. I don't think anyone thought Vince Gill would become the musician he is now when he was playing banjo for the Pure Praire League. Or, when Flea left Julliard, I doubt the instuctors there thought he would be doing what he's doing now.

there's also something to be said about music as it relates to people. in my opinion, if your music doesn't relate to someone then that's true failure. there are several genres that i think take less talent to play but they still relate to people, just not me. there are also some genres that i think take a lot of talent (free jazz and classical) but still don't relate to me. i know that joe is pulling people's chain to some degree here, but personally i'm trying to get past my musical elitism... =)

I guess I'm still confused to this day exactly what Alternative music is. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alternative_rock if this is true, then it's just all the music that isn't radio friendly. Not that I don't listen to the radio, but IMO if your going to let radio stations and big music corporations decide what is good music, then your really missing out. Don't they have some sort of agenda here, perhaps money.

My my, we're full of venom against the oldies today, hunh? Aw, you turning 30 or something? Man, that sucks. My condolences.

actually I'm closing in on 50, and still have an open mind. My listening and playing are always evolving, as they should.

Well, you don't sound it *at all*.

I see you like your titles non-confusing:

Some folks who are really good choose to play fairly simple, straighforward music in their 'working band' incarnations I guess, because that's what pays the bills, and they may actually quite enjoy the genre as well. One that comes to mind is the guy from Guns-n-Roses. I just assumed he was your usual shirtless, tatooed melodic metal type player. But I've since seen him in a number of different situations and the guy is hugely talented and can play all kinds of complex stuff. He just chose to play a specific style for the band that he happened to be in and got well known for.
