I wonder how much more fossil fuel will be used to create the electricity...

You guys may think I'm evil, but It needs to make sense financially first...if it's better for the environment, that would be a bonus.

But that's the underlying question, isn't it?  It's like having a carpool lane; it's only a good idea if very few use it.  If everyone does, then it will suddenly become the slowest lane on the freeway.  The corollary with the electric car is that if a lot of people start driving one, electricity supply will be strained and become more expensive.

Though there may be some resistance...

Resistance to the volt is a current topic.

We actually got a 2014 Volt. I'm sure the newer ones are better. We saved 4,000 USD by getting a new 2014 that hadn't been sold.

So far, we've driven 471.4 miles and we've used 4.8 gallons of gas, averaging 97.1 mpg.

In this photo, you can see we have 12 miles we could drive electric on the current charge.

When we bought the car, it had 170 miles on it.

We haven't needed to fill up yet.

The corollary with the electric car is that if a lot of people start driving one, electricity supply will be strained and become more expensive.

And when people get dependant on car charging the power companies and owners of the charging points can start fiddling with the electricity price. In the end, they'll most likely take care of that the total costs will rise to approx. the same level as that of petrol.

That's the way things tend to go. The required, yearly technical inspection of motor vehicles used to be a state monopoly in Finland
some 20 years ago. The price was moderate, but people complained about it anyway, of course. Then they opened it to private enterprise  in order to get lower prices through competition. The result was, that the prices started rising, as they simply lifted them as high as people tolerate, and there's too many shops selling the service.
