An Update,

Things are improving... I have had time to read over all the responses in the thread. I didn't do much, I reloaded SONAR, I added track two, assigned it an OMNI MIDI Input and an Output of the same "driver" (it was the only choice, E-MU Xmid1x1 tab), armed the track by hitting the red button, then went to the top of the screen and hit record. The metronome started clicking through the PC speakers and I played a few notes and chords with and without the sustain pedal, and everything got recorded and played back perfectly. The sound was played back by the keyboard speakers only, which is just what I wanted. I swear I did the same thing on my initial test and nothing worked right. Hmmm?

Next I tried inserting the soft synth on track three, did some more recording, and this time the playback came through the PC speakers... which will not be as good for my current plans, but nice to know it can work that way.

Now I wish I could find the quantitize button, how to select a clip for transposition, and getting a bass and treble clef in staff view. I'll welcome all suggestions....

Thanks

EK

Hi All,

Three Quick Questions, 1.) How do you set the start and end loop points?

2.) When I assign a MIDI Channel other than One to a track, my keyboard doesn't sound on playback. This results in all my tracks having to go through MIDI Channel One if I want to hear them, and any adjustment to volume, Pan, etc. effects all the tracks.

3.) It would also be nice to assign different patches to these tracks, but I haven't figured that out yet either, and my Roland Keyboard only supports a few patches (Harpsichord, Strings, Electric Piano) It would be great to grab a couple of those for some polyphonic work through MIDI.

Only my opinion but I would bite off and chew 1 thing at a time. So for now here is # 1 answered:
(I made this video a few years back but its still apply's the same way)

Hey Chuck,

That was VERY helpful. I've got the looping now. Still working on MIDI Channels... Leaving these unanswered.

Not really sure I about #3 as you have sonar artist and patch points are not available in that version. but #1:
1- Try setting your inputs to Omni. If you want your midi to go through a certain track you need to set the input for that track.
It could be midi echo is not on in those tracks. you can echo all tracks by using the icon in the control bar module.
- Click the Input Echo On/Off All Tracks button in the Control Bar’s Mix module.

You may have to set local control on the keyboard to Off. Check it's documentation for how to do that.

Scour the internet for an Instrument Definition for your keyboard. That will allow you to select which banks and patches you want to hear from within SONAR. You can also create your own.

getting a bass and treble clef in staff view.

In X3 (my most recent program), you open the Staff view, select Edit>Layout and choose Treble/Bass in the Staff Properties.

You really , really need to try using VST soft synths, Unless you have a dozen hardware synths your not going to get very far with MIDI.
It's supper easy to insert a VST instrument and assign the output of the midi track to it. Learn how to do this and you'll never look back. Even Artist comes with  a heap of great synths.
