I know, right?

I upgraded to a new Netgear modem, I decided to just buy a TOTL instead of lease whatever they offer and I got a new router too, a Netgear Nighthawk AC1900. Things improved a LOT. I can stream outside on the rear deck. The front porch is iffy but the router is upstairs. Soon it will be moved downstairs and I'm getting an extra router just for my DAW (when I hook go online) to use an Ethernet cable. Now, wireless is almost instant with this router but Ethernet, heck.... things load almost before I hit the button, it's that fast. Comcast has the fastest and most reliable internet around here by far.
I'm glad you got fixed up!

The improvement I've noticed most of all is when streaming video on Amazon (or Netflix). For starters, I'm getting a much better, consistent picture quality. I think it was automatically downgrading me to 480p at times due to my dicey connection. Now everything is pin sharp and the audio sounds much better as well. Also, when I skip ahead or rewind, the change happens almost instantly whereas before we'd have to stare at this stupid spinning circle for about 15 seconds before it got the new location buffered. Sometimes I would reach for the mouse to skip the opening titles and my girlfriend would literally slap my hand because she knew that watching the titles was actually quicker than waiting for it to buffer when I skipped ahead. Now I can reach for that mouse without getting slapped so the new modem was worth it just for that.

That's great... but you're in NYC. Shouldn't you be able to use a neighbor's internet? LOL...

I remember back when wifi was a new thing, nobody passworded their signal...a time of bandwidth freebies. Not any more.

Not too bad considering we just got back our power from a pile of trees falling around yesterday...ding thunderstorms...

I get 95 down and 5 up in Richmond, VA.

95+5=100. Perfect score.

It's a first ever for me! I'm going too print out out and scotch tape it to the mantel.

sharke,

I suspect this is better than getting a new crap that is a holy modem?

But how can you be sure that it's really modulating and demodulating?

I'm getting 50ish download and 6-7 upload. I just bought a modem, router, Ooma device, antennae and a media pc. I've had it with paying Comcast $200+ a month. My phone number should be ported over to Ooma tomorrow and I'll give Comcast back their over priced rented gear. I'm blown away with the media pc solution, I'm loading music and pictures now. It's pretty intuitive, the picture quality is better with the antennae than it was with cable for local channels.
It was expensive getting started but the pay back will be less than a year and I'll have the above equipment to show for it. All said and done I should be paying under $60 a month for everything. The only thing I'll miss is ESPN but I can pay a lot of tabs at a sports bar for $140 a month.
