Hey folks.  Would I be correct (or wrong) in assuming that any external piece of hardware you would like to use as a trigger for Session Drummer would need midi ports?     I saw an advert for a very affordable electronic drum pad / kit
Its called CUBEAT Drum Machine and MIDI Controller for ipad & PC      I was thinking about buying one of these but I see it only has USB.    If I look at my SD inputs in the Inspector it only has a list of midi settings such as Omni or midi channel 1 , 2, 3 etc.
If Im wasting my time buying a USB drum kit please tell me.     Failing that, there is also the option of the Millenium D-90
Its not bad price but more expensive than the CUBEAT guy.    But it does at least have MIDI ports.   Is this more the type of thing i need to buy to use with SD?    At the moment I use a trigger keyboard which has a midi out port.   Its not bad but trying to sue keys for drum rolls etc is difficult.
Thanks guys.

Hi. I use an electronic drum kit for triggering my drum vsti's. It is a very nice way to get some feel to the recordings.
You will see the extra MIDI input, when something extra is connected.
All the best.

Thanks Ken.   So basically, my guess was correct?   A usb device is useless for this and a device with a midi port is what is needed.

Hi Agentcalm,

If I am understanding your question correctly, you're asking if the hardware device has to have MIDI ports in order to transmit MIDI data? The answer is no, this can be done through USB.

I don't want to give you advice about this specific piece of hardware in case I turn out to be wrong, but I use a Studiologic Numa Nero as a MIDI keyboard controller. It connects to my computer through USB. It transmits MIDI data through various MIDI channels to SONAR. SONAR recognizes the Nero as a MIDI input device.

In general, a MIDI device connected by USB should show up as a choice for MIDI input in your MIDI setup.

No.
I should have been more precise in my last post. It is a USB electronic drum kit, and it works like a charm.

Thanks lads.  Yep Sean, thats pretty much what i was asking.    I was afraid of buying a USB drum kit only to find that Session Drummer wont play soldiers with a usb device.    I should have mentioned by the way lads that i am using a very basic Sonar X3 Studio.  I dont know if it matters much but its not even Professional or Artist level.
I could upgrade if it matters but X3 works for my needs so I dont want to waste money upgrading software if there is no need.
Ken do you mind me asking what virtual drums you're using.  Is it like EZ drummer or SD etc?    Sounds like your drum software is seeing you usb controller drum kit no problem.

I mostly use Superior Drummer 2 and Addictive Drums 2. It also works with Session Drummer.
It's triggered by an Alesis DM6 USB.

And X3 Studio is just fine. Just make sure to upgrade to the latest patch

Ken did you need to do any complicating programming or assigning when you plugged in your kit?   Im not very good at that and i was wondering if when you hit your real snare for example,  did you get a snare sound in your VST drums.    Did you have to go through each drum head on the real kit and match it to the VST kit
So real snare = vst snare
real tom = vst tom    etc etc.
