I keep seeing it posted in the DC metro news that the probe is getting closer and closer, and I am looking forward to whatever we get to see/hear about the fly-by.

It's pretty amazing to me that folks have figured out how to calculate out the precise positions of things moving through space in different orbits, and different directions, and at different speeds, and how to correctly LAND on a freaking comet!  That blows my mind.  And the precision involved to have this fly-by line up properly after almost TEN YEARS is crazy cool.  I am seriously impressed.

The Science Channel keeps showing a commercial of a show about this coming next Wednesday.  I'll be tuning in!

I still remember the first time I tracked down Pluto back in my amateur astronomy days, it was quite cool even though it just looked like a faint star gradually moving among the background stars over a period of days, the actual realization when I knew I had tracked it down was a memorable feeling.

Yes it's amazing what they can do, I am still amazed how they predicted comet Shoemaker\Levy 9 was going to hit Jupiter more than a year out, and when the impact would occur, mind boggling

And yet, some say audiosnap does not work.

Hi,

It was what ... something like 40 years ago, when either Voyager or Pioneer, first broke the electro-magnetic sphere for Jupiter, I think it was, and they had sound, and pictures and such ... it was really cool ... and I still remember it.

One can only hope that Pluto also has something similar to make us go gushing and pegging all over the place!

Not surprising that you have not heard about Pluto lately. He was unfortunately killed in a hunting accident in 1931. Although Disney Studios continued to make shorts featuring Mickey's beloved dog, they were all done using a stable of various stand ins, as was done with the later film versions of Lassie and Rin Tin Tin. Many have noted that the substitute Plutos did not even look like the dog they were cast to portray. The sudden appearance of an upright talking Puto in later productions has been explained by the use of cartoon humans dressed in dog suits, as Mikey (Johnathan Stanhope Jr. in the early films, later replaced by George Hamlish)  in a mouse suit had always been done from the beginning of the franchise. Disney has denied all of these crass deceptions, but recently photographic evidence of the scene at the original moose hunt has surfaced proving that Pluto had been dead all along.

I like the way that NASA put the ashes of Clyde Tombaugh on the New Horizons spacecraft, so that the remains of the man who discovered Pluto will actually fly through the Pluto planetary system, and then further into outer space. An artistic, romantic gesture for sure. Its rare that governmental employees are up to an historical moment like this.

Or were they just the ashes from the NASA lobby ash tray?
