AudioGaming has released GrooveExtractor, a plugin for Mac OS X and Windows that transcribes a drum loop recording into five components: bass drum, snare drum, close hihat, open hihat/cymbal and tom-toms. The transcription result is represented as General MIDI file.
There are two analysis settings:
  • Electronic represents the groove by 3 components: kick, snare and hi-hat. It works best for loops generated by electronic drum machines.
  • Acoustics represents the groove by 5 components: kick, snare, close hi-hat, cymbal/open hi-hat and toms. It works best for acoustic drum recordings.
Price: 8.99 €. GrooveExtractor is available for Mac OS X and Windows in VST, Audio Units and AAX plugin formats.

Drum Replacer, Groove Extractor.  The one I have been using the most, lately, is from "Electric Larryland Audio" the money extractor. CPU hog? No, billfold hog.

It was free when it was in beta. If it works as advertised it's a no brainer. Hi-hat and cymbal detection would be awesome! Everything else can be done pretty efficiently with what we have now. I would bite if I could find some solid info. I'm sure the Sonar Drum Replacer will evolve and be a one stop solution for this task.

Watching him take the audio, drag it in...then drag the MIDI out right into the track...

That's slick...if it does that well...hopefully Drum Replacer will do that one day...

On KVR they stated that the Beta worked well...

I think I might have to bite the bullet and plunk down a Hamilton and see
how it does...

This site doesn't like GIF files, or maybe just animated GIF files. Anyway...

For the price (just over US$10), I went ahead and bought it. Will be fun to play with. One little word of caution...

When I use PayPal, I prefer not to give any info to the selling site (other than email address) if I don't have to. Here, you must. Since they could get all the info they need (including my email addy) from PayPal (as some sites do), I skipped the required fields the first time and then picked PayPal. Bork! Had to go back and add my contact info.

That's when the little problem started. Even when you go back and add your contact info, it still wants to charge you another couple of bucks VAT. The total in the right sidebar is correct, but the amount it will bill your CC/PayPal includes the VAT.

I had to delete the item from my cart, add it back, enter my contact info at the beginning, then no problem. Plus, the exchange rate of US$ and € is pretty good right now for peeps buying with US$.

Follow-up

What I wound up being offered for download was GrooveExtractor Lite Full. The first time you run it, it will prompt for a key. So far...I dunno. Need to try a couple of different approaches. One thing I've noticed is that GE creates a MIDI type 0 file, not type 1 (which I would have expected, with each of the 3 or 5 extracted grooves having its own track).

Took me a bit of time to find it. SONAR categorizes it as a VST2 Instrument (grooveextractor_lite).

Kind of "tricky" not to mention "LITE" on their web page. That would suggest that they've got a greater functionality version coming. For more money. We shall see.

More later.

The Paypal conversion is always MORE then the current conversion rate...

That I found out from dealing with Time+Space and BestService...

$10.30...with the Paypal conversion of .87 when the current is .89...

But it's only a few cents...
