hi. i am having trouble with the use of the garritan personal orchestra in sonar 4. midi response is ok. in fact midi data recording is working. but there's no sound. i believe i have checked the audio settings already.

How are you routing the midi tracks to GPO? If you've loaded GPO into the Synth Rack, direct the output of the midi tracks to the GPO instance(s) and the output channels to the respective instrument "slots" in the GPO player, which default to receiving on channels 1-8 respectively.

Garritan uses the mod wheel on your controller for volume (i think). Make sure the mod wheel isn't zeroed out.

I use GPO with Sonar 4.2 and finally gave up on the mod wheel thing. If you select "options" just below LOAD and then click on "Use Std. CC#7/CC#10 volume & pan," this will disable the mod wheel from acting as your volume controller. Now GPO will respond to normal CC#7 volume commands. I much prefer working this way.

my problem now is that sometimes when i play an instrument in GPO, the pitch of a note DIPS first before hitting the actual one. is there a specific setting to correct this? or does this have anything to do with latency?

hmm.. some out of pitch samples probably .. you should contact Mr. Garritan himself and let him know about this...could be fixed for the next major revision IF they plan updating some of the samples there besides the engine itself

The out-of-pitch behavior sounds like either a latency or clock problem. The samples in GPO are not generally out of tune, except for some very subtle and mostly natural variations.

Enabling CC#7/CC#10 does not disable the effect of the mod wheel in GPO. Dispensing with the use of the mod wheel and reverting to CC#7 is actually a bad move with GPO. The samples in GPO are layered to respond to CC#1, which affect not only volume, but timbre as well. If you completely dispense with the mod wheel, and your CC#1 settings are essentially "0", you will have to turn up the volume of the instruments to an extraordinarly high level to hear them.

Yes, if you are trying to play back pre-existing MIDI files, Garritan's use of mod wheel for volume (on sustained instruments) can be problematic. On the Garritan site, there is a free MIDI plugin FX available, that will translate volume controller in the file to mod wheel control. That can often help with tracks that you don't hear.

I think sirvonrod talks about a specific pitch dip.. probably something like going down or up in pitch after the inital attack..many sample libraries have some inconsistent notes pitchess/pitch changes over time../bad attacks

latency? how could latency have anything to do with PITCH? assuming that all the rest works fine and we're not talking here about a soundcard drivers problems..

You're probably right about latency. Maybe clock or that "full chase lock" thing. I remember having difficulties in the old days on a machine with a SB card and got all sorts of weird pitch problems until I got the card set up correctly. Fortunately that was the old days...

I've used GPO extensively and have never found overt pitch problems in any of the samples. There definitely are problems here and there with clicking and looping glitches, but not varying or sliding pitches.

Anyway, to say that it dips before hitting the right note implies that it must be hitting on pitch, then dipping, then going back to pitch!? There are a few GPO voices with "playable trills", where the note-on plays the note, and not-off plays a half-step higher...not a dip, but a rise, but maybe...

BTW, Al, glad to see that you've stayed with the forum after the disappearance of "AL". I've always looked for your posts and appreciate your directness.
