External USB hard drives are very cheap. I have a bunch. I even one tha's USB 3.0.
But an external HD 7200rpm would be better than your 5400. I believe.
I always just buy a case and an Int HD and put the drive in. Cheaper and I know what I've got.

Ok... so what do you suggest, install SONAR X1 in a external HD? or Project and Content folders only?

Sonar should stay on you system drive. All your projects should go on one just for projects and if you can a third for samples.

So lets say SONAR in C:, PROJECTS in D:, and if possible CONTENT in E:, yes?

Ok, not difficult but only have one external drive right now to try that, what if, SONAR in C:, and PROJECTS & CONTENT in D:? anyways, do you think this would be a good solution for my issue? i mean using external drives?
John

It will work just fine.  The 3 disk thing is the ideal. It is not a necessity.  Many do well with just the one disk. But because you are looking for a bit better performance 2 disks will do the job.

I have 5 running disks plus more not running as removable HDs. That is not enough for me.

Well thanks once more for the advice John, now by the sound of it you are not a home recording hobbyist are you? coz 5+ HD seems to be like lots of data...

I do video and recording for a lot of others and need the space. I do it for foundations and Veteran organizations. I do it on a shoestring too. I produce them and do most of the work.

Some of my videos have been all over the country.

IMO you can always find a use for a ext HD. I am on a desktop PC. 3 Internal drives and 2 external. The externals are for backups and the 3 Int are as John has stated.
