  • Trying to Edit Clip Envelopes from an older 8.5 project

Hi,
I've been loading some of my older projects from Sonar 8.5.3 and all have imported well except I've noticed a few minor differences.  I've looked around here awhile now, and have found a partial answer, but still trying to edit a clip gain envelope in Track View that I had created in an older Sonar Producer 8.5.3 project.

I can see the envelope as a straight line on the clip, but can't see any nodes so I can't edit it. I did figured out how to add a NEW envelope (finally!) by using the center mouse button, but still not able to edit an original gain envelope that was already there from Sonar 8.5. Most of the threads I've found in my searches refer to Sonar X1 and not Platinum. Probably a simple solution here that I must be overlooking. Thanks, appreciate any answers.

the easiest way to create 2 envelopes within a passage is to drag select that area and then wait till the mouse turns in to a double sided arrow.

I know its probably not related or going to solve your problem but I hope it helps

Not simple at all. Clip gain automation is handled by the 'smart tool' which, yes, you can activate with the center mouse button. From there you click on one of the tools until one works. Usually the one all the way to the left. That's the one with intelligence so they say. Then, after diddling with it for a couple hours, you'll realize the best way to edit your clip gain is to switch back to 8.53.

Clip gain is done the same way, no ?
the only difference is the line is red and not green

From the Manual

"Clip automation is performed in Take lanes, not Automation lanes. For details, see “Take lanes” on
page 682. Clip envelopes can be adjusted in the parent track or in a Take lane."

Also set the Edit Filter to clips.
If you are trying to edit clip gain envelops this may be the reason for not being able to.

what I was referring to is, the process to select and edit is the same way in a lane or on the clip.

I might be misunderstood but I thought he was looking for a way to edit the already established envelope.
The best to do this in my opinion is just like the the video I posted.
Drag select and then Drag down/up.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I won't get to try these methods out until I return home tomorrow, so I'll let you guys know what works and what doesn't at that point.  Just to clarify my original question:....I have learned how to create a new clip gain envelope using the center mouse, but what I'm not finding is how to edit a pre-existing clip gain envelope that was included on a clip from an old Sonar 8.5.3 bundle file that I loaded into Platinum. I can see the line that represents the envelope, but it seems it needs to be activated somehow so I can make changes to it, and that's what I haven't gotten to figure out yet.

Timidi, lol, yeah that's the conclusion I came to also, just switch back to 8.5.3  Used to just right click on a clip and choose "create clip envelope"...everything I needed was right there, didn't need anything fancy.

Chuck, I think I remember seeing that double arrow but didn't know what it was for, probably because I was thinking left to right instead of dragging down or up. It seems obvious now that you've mentioned it, the arrows actually point up and down too...brain fart!  lol.

John, I remember reading about the Edit Filter in one of the older threads on Sonar X1, but tbh, I don't know exactly where it is in Platinum and where the settings are located, if you could point the way, I'll give that a try too.
Thanks!

That video Tim posted is perfect.
Its almost identical to how I did it in the video I posted in my previous comment.
Except in the you tube video he is using the timeline. I drag/select right on the track (or in a lane) so I can see the transients im trying to move.

The drag/select + up/down method will do existing clip gain envelopes.
Let us know how it pans out.

Hey Chuck. Yea, I think the OP couldn't find the 'clip gain' in the drop down menu as is shown in Craig's video.
And, I think Clip gain envelopes in lanes is unnecessary.

For me, using that swipe/select method is really cumbersome. Maybe for other stuff it's ok, just not gain. Or, maybe I'm just not used to it.
I use clip gain envelopes on a micro level with tons of nodes and edits are usually shaped like a 'V' not a box.
and volume on a macro level.
