"Frenzy" (Modern Rock/Metal)

Hi, everybody,

Here's a test mix for a new Modern Rock/Metal song called "Frenzy".

If you can spare a few minutes, please check it out for me. As always, any and all helpful comments, suggestions, constructive criticism, input and ideas are welcome, and also greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance for any observations, suggestions, comments and ideas, you guys are the best!

NOTE:  Remix Uploaded 5/17/13 after finally getting to get back in the studio!  Thanks to everyone for your input, advice and ideas!

For the remix I swept out a lot of mud from the rhythm guitars, went back to my original bass guitar EQ setup from my first CD, ramped up the drone guitar intro with a short fade in, took Paulo's suggestion about introducing a short feedback type blast over the intro, and cleaned up a couple of the drum fills.  I'm hoping the overall volume levels are okay, and that it translates a bit better on most systems.  Let me know what you think.

NOTE: JUST UPLOADED NEW MIX #3 UPLOADED 5-19-13

LOL, I wasn't happy with Mix #2 after checking it on a few different systems/devices, so, I went back to the drawing board and beefed up the drums and bass, re-eqed the rhythm guitars, adjusted bus levels, and backed off the mastering limiter a wee bit.  I think it seems to translate better now, and I'm hoping the overall levels seem okay.

YIKES!!!  It always sucks trying to get your "ears" back in shape after being away from the recording/mixing process for a couple of months!

Thanks for all your input and observations!
Bob

When it kicked in, it felt a little bottom heavy/muddy to me? But I'm listening on ear buds (but that's how I usually listen?)

It's the guitars that come in from the beginning they seem to be in the way of the bass? I may HPF them a bit more.

I like the song, the vox sit right. Push the drums... But they may be getting covered by those droning guitars from the beginning?

**DISCLAIMER!!**

Please note, I am not a mix master! Please take any mix related comments from me with some salt... Just called it the way I saw it, that doesn't mean it's right.

I agree with Robby. The rest of the mix is good, but those guitars have some odd distortion that is... not harsh, or piercing... but... fatiguing. Resonates wrong in the ear. It sounds like the distortion is buried in the harmonics if that makes any sense to you. I am not sure how you should clean it up, as I am not sure how you arrived at that tone. Other than that the song is very good, and I liked the hint of synth in the background.

Well, it sure was a wild ride  for me. I think the vocals need to come up some and maybe do a bit more track panning, a little left and a little right, sounds to much in the middle. You know the sound your looking for, but I don't listen much to metal music, I'm kind of Christian Rock and film score. But, you can work on clearing up the song a bit, I know you have it in you. Good song though, the lyrics tell it all.

Peace and blessings, John

Loud crisp mix... sounds well balanced to me... Vox sits nicely in the upper mids... I don't hear any problems at all...
Very cool tune, huge sound... Great work Bob...

I agree with Frank on this.  This mix is not the norm for this type of music, which is why it appeals to me.  I think that you're thinking outside of the box, here, and that is what may throw one off.  The texture is chunky, and the  drums really drive this song.  I like your vision for this song.

Oh, no. What I hear is not a style choice... it is distortion on the drone. It is not the drone itself that is the problem. Your rig might not be picking it up.

Not sure if this is a new remix, but this sounds super here. Instruments sound huge and the vocal treatment has really taken this one to the next level. I think this is my favorite from you. Awesome work Bob

Bob,

I like the power of the track...mix is good, etc..   Guitar playing is outstanding as are the vocals.   I am a fan of your music.   What I find missing is a strong melody hook.   I think a lot of guitar players tend to put more focus on the tracks, guitar hooks, guitar tone, solos, etc,,, and not so much the melody.    I hope this is a fair observation, feel free to tell me I am full of sh#$ if you disagree.    If you look at a lot of the rockers or metal groups that do Unplugged Sessions their songs, that were popular, are always able to stand on their own with a few acoustic guitars, bass and some percussion.   If your melody works with an acoustic guitar or piano it will really work with your full Oister treatment.  As an example, your song Broken Angel was super melodic and I can immediately recognize it.   Great hook, very memorable.   While I like Frenzy from a pure listening enjoyment perspective, I don't find the melody super memorable.   The guitar solo is superb, wouldn't change it a bit....  I hope there is some useful info in this bit of rambling observation.
Regards
