If the B blues lick is too outside sounding for you replace it with an E blues lick. So you would play
A blues 1 bar/ Bb blues 1 bar / E blues 1 bar

The best way to learn jazz is to listen to it.

That's enough to put me off already....

It IS a bit different than other genres.  Like the best way to learn Punk is to get hit in the face, roight?

Naw. Learn how to play a power chord, buy some REALLY crappy gear and get as drunk as humanly possible without dying before playing a gig.

I probably shouldn't add this because it's too much info to ingest but fun to play with. if you have a ii7 V7 I chord progression vamping you could keep moving up playing a blues scale in half steps

Dm7   G7  CM7     CM7    Dm7 G7    CM7   CM7
////     ////   ////       ////     ////     ////    ////  ////

Example Dm7 (A blues lick) G7( Bb blues lick) CM7 ( B blues lick)  2nd CM7(C blues lick 2 beats C# blues lick 2 beats)
            Dm7( D blues) G7(D# blues lick)  CM7( E blues lick)

Clear Your Mind For Reset

Now a new set of blues scales for our Dm7 to G7 to CM7 clip in Sonar

Play a D blues lick for 1 bar. Then play an Eb blues lick 1 bar. Now play an E blues lick 2 bars

Once you have that under your fingers pull up your trusty Dm7 to G7 to CM7 clip in Sonar

You know the routine! Play it with the changes and LISTEN to the sound
Record it and listen back

You have the Dm7 G7 CM7 clip recorded in Sonar using the Charleston Rhythm. If you don't please make one. If you need help let me know so I can help you get one recorded. You'll need to be able to record it because I'm going to add 3 note chord subs for the Dm7 G7 CM7 voicings I gave you.

I thought all you had to do to play Jazz was just hit a bunch of unrelated notes and, if a note sounds particularly bad, then make sure you hit it with emphasis a second time to show that you really did mean to play it the first time!

That was my understanding as well. Now Bill has me all confused!

Or was I already confused? Now I'm really confused.

There are several blues scales that can be used as substitute scales for the ii7 and V7 and I. You know all your blues scales and where to play them so it's a matter of spending time playing the substitutes. That take more than a day! At least 2

Also, to get the most out of this info it's a good idea to practice the ii7 - V7 chords shown. Get a clean sound without any extra notes or noise from the strings. Strive for a clean percussive sound. The chord voicings have a root, 3rd, and 7th only. Each note needs to be clearly heard.

The CMaj7 chord is voiced C    Root (A string/3rd fret)  B   7th(Gstring/4th fret) and E  3rd (B string/5th Fret)

Contrary to what you may have been told playing the licks with a dotted 16 note feel is not right. If you want a good jazz feel on your single note jazz lines it's a 8th note triplet without the middle note. Say trip ple let. Leave out the ple!Now it's trip    let trip    let trip   let

just sayin

I recorded a bass line with with Dimension Pro using an upright bass long release if anyone wants the file. It's the ii7 to V7 To I cadence. You can use any swing drum rhythm with it. I made a file with AD2 jazz sticks. The good thing about making a midi file is it's so east to transpose to another key or change the tempo. Very easy to make these kinds of files to practice with in Sonar
