A new song. I decided last week to write something new.... with nothing but the title word, I started.

All parts are me playing and singing.... Guitars and mandolin were fun to play...... drums are JS3 and the bass was midi played through Cake Sound center sample...... piano and B3 are not me.

It's called "Free" .... reminiscing a bit and looking back, ahhhh those were great days  .... as well as perhaps a bit forward too.

Hope you enjoy it.....

Like this Herb. Pittsburgh Steel and Detroit Power. Nice to be free, now a daze it's just that not so fresh feeling...

When I was 18, I had a good friend, "Joe Scopa" He was full of piss and vinegar. He was injured in an auto accident and close to the edge, but came back. And he would speak about the experience and say that it made him appreciate life more.

I was partying with him one night, and he told me how earlier that day he pulled up to a light and looked over at an older man in a really nice car, Joe was in "Bessy" his old Camaro, and he said even though the man was clearly well off, he felt as though the man envied him because he was young and had his whole life ahead of him.

The next day, Joe was killed in a head-on driving Bessy when her brakes failed. :-( But he was a free spirit. It's good to be free, because you never know.

Thanks.... I spent the most time actually on this write working on the second verse. I even re-wrote it completely this morning and recorded the vocal second verse in an hour around lunch time. Then I changed a line after recording it so I had to record it again..... and I could easily tweeze a word or two even now.

I was thinking about some of the guys I hung with in high school.... jacked up cars, nice paint jobs, big fat racing slicks, mostly Chevy and Ford, but one guy actually had an old funeral hurse that he jacked up and dropped in an engine with a turbo charger sticking through the hood..... very cool car. We all were concerned when they did the draft lottery.... to see who got lucky and who didn't.

Glad you like it.

This took me someplace special Herb. Can't ask for more than that in a song.

Wow, no that surely gives a person something to think about. Very lovely song with a message for many. I'm free in the sense that I'm retired now and don't have to work, yet I'm thankful for the work I have had in my life. My freedom is creating my music, painting my pictures and praising  my Lord. Comfort come in many form for many people. It is a big world we live in and I often think of those who have never in their entire life have known what it is to be free. This song would surely work for them. Great arrangement, vocals, instrumentation, production and mix. Very nicely done.

Peace be with you and blessings, John

Thanks John.  I simply started to write a song with the idea of FREE in it...and then what did that mean to a man at 3 stages in his life.... as a kid who really has no cares other than to be home when momma said to be home, as a young man facing the world and the draft in the 60's and then in the final days when losing loved ones ...and what is freedom in each of those situations.

I'm glad this is touching so many folks in a special way.

Serious_Noize!
This sounds great Herb!! You really sang about a lot of things that reflect moments in my life and others that I can really relate to. This is really a great song!! And as for the loud comment I made a few weeks ago I wanted to let you to know that EVERYTHING for me at that time was too loud, I had just repaired some wiring on my monitor speakers and I missed one very important wire, but I got it fixed so now everything sounds as it should sound. I had a bad short and had to remove a section of wiring.

I really enjoyed hearing this one Herb!! Thanks for posting!!

Bobby
