Obviously any drivers, windows or ASIO will have to be rewritten to take advantage of any new architecture or APIs.

Yeah, I'll wait for that to happen.

Not working any more and not taking any projects at the moment I'm going to give Win 10 a go. I've got a complete image of my hard drive.

I'll try the upgrade first and see how it goes and if it runs OK I'll do a fresh install.

FYI from Steinberg

Hello all,

We will release an official announcement later today but our tests have shown performance and timing issues with Cubase, Nuendo and Sequel on Windows 10 (build 10240) systems.
Also, the latest Quicktime 7.7.7 cannot be installed on a Windows 10 system which basically removes the video support in Cubase and Nuendo.
While these issues did not occur on all systems we tested with, we can only recommend to wait.

In addition, the Yamaha Steinberg USB and Firewire drivers also show issues with sample rate switches and thus are not fully compatible either.

More information will follow as soon as we know more.

It's a little frightening that Steinberg found so many problems with W10. I'd hoped that it would be a smoother fit with existing hardware and software, as going from Win7 to Win8 was.

I know that nearly all of the preview builds had audio-related issues, such as no audio after an update and drivers that hung on install. Problems have been reported related to integrated audio drivers, external audio interfaces and audio-related software such as Spotify.

I am also a little concerned about the new mandatory updates. Just before the RTM went out, an update was automatically pushed out to Win10 beta users that crashed Windows Explorer and therefore could not be rolled back. This is some scary sh|t. You'll never know when you'll come in to the office/studio to find a non-functioning computer waiting for you.

Some food for thought if you are a Windows 7 user.

If you use Windows 8.

Worth a read.

I have Windows 10 running on an older Intel system. (Q6600, Intel DG33BU, 8GB Ram, Audiophile 192, FW 410).
All of my legacy hardware works.  This machine can't be upgraded anymore.

On a side note I still use Acronis True Image 2010 and I transferred my W10 OS to a new drive without a problem.

I will also install it on another older machine.

I upgraded two systems and I will probably wait until July 28, 2016 to install them.

I still need to use XP mode.  The great thing is W8 Pro, W10 Pro have a better virtual machine.

I jumped on board just long enough to realize that there's no place like home. The roll back option for win 7 users is fast. About 12 minutes and I'm back to Win 7 and again have usable outboard gear.

I upgraded yesterday.  I had a couple of issues that were deal killers and I was prepared to go back to Win 7 with an image file.  I had sounds in Sonar Platinum but no Windows sounds.  That was fixed with new drivers and software for my audio interface, RME Hammerfall Multiface II.  RME posted updates just days ago.  MP3, Wav, MP4 files would not play.  They were set to play in Microsoft's cloud player which would not play local files.  Searched for Default Programs and set them all back to Media Player.  Some are worried about Win 10 phone home and privacy issues.  During initial startup, if you select Custom Settings (little tiny link....look close)  you can turn all of that off.  Now I like it.  I am an IT professional by day job and I never upgrade an O/S until service pack 1.  This time I am making an exception.  I am impressed after solving my 2 issues.  I am keeping Win 10.  Garrett Morris even said in an interview "Win 10 been belli, belli good to me."  ☺
