I am looking for folks' suggestions for best traditional R&B/Soul type horn sounds to use from the supplied Sonar Virtual Instruments.  I am particularly interested in trumpet.  I have tried a couple of the Dimension Pro and the TTS presets, but everything sounds a little too 'reedy' to me, rather than 'brassy'.  Any suggestions - including affordable third party products if that seems to be the best way to go.  Thanks.

Moving this to the general software area. I think you will get better answers here.

As far as brass for CW synths, the only source I know for real instruments in a format usable in DPro is DSF. Their expansion packs all have demos on their site https://www.digitalsoundfactory.com

Other than that, I guess Kontakt is the solution for sampled brass. There are others here far more knowledgeable about this subject.

good luck.

Vintage Horns sounds like what you are looking for:
http://www.pluginboutique.com/product/55-Kontakt-Instrument/819-Vintage-Horns

This uses the free Kontakt 5 player so you do not need to buy the full version of Kontakt.
I use this myself and I find it quite good.

I don't know what your budget is but you get a lot for $199 USD in this package.

I hope this helps.

I moved the thread down here to solicit other solutions. I thought your original post was pretty good. The options for DPro a limited and hoped others would chime in with other ideas like the one you deleted. IIRC, it too supported Kontakt player.

Right now Bigfish Audio has "First Call Horns" on sale for $140.  For R&B, Funk and Rock it's a hard to beat package.  Great sound and lots of articulations.  Check it out.

Do you want orchestra or contemporary?

Orchestra - try VSL Brass Special Edition Vol. 1 or EastWest Hollywood Brass Silver.  Both are affordable.
For contemporary as someone mentioned is SampleModeling or Chris Heins.

Another one is Native Instruments Session Horns or Session Horns Pro. Also Chris Hein Horns Compact.

Vir2 Mojo might be up the right alley: http://www.vir2.com/instruments/mojo-horn-section/
