I don't like the guitar tones. Have tried Guitar Rig, TH2.  Any suggestions? Let me know what you think.

Dude Ivey
On the mixes that you posted what are u using, GR or TH2? Everyone is gonna have  their opinions but i like the guitar tones. If i was mixing the songs i would use the tones u already have but i would try to make them a little bigger. They got good tone, they just dont slap u upside the head. I can usually make that happen, for me anyway, with a compressor and an eq. The tone is there.

i am using GR. I did use and eq and a compressor, but I must not be using them correctly. I am definatley looking for the "slap you upside the head", just don't know how to do it.

There's some kind of resonance in the bass on the note B (6th scale step here) that keeps jumping out and stepping on the entire rest of the mix. Far as I can tell it only happens on that note. It keeps foregrounding the bass and backgrounding the guitars. I think if that one resonance wasn't present, you'd be able to balance the track and hear the guitars up where you want them throughout. First thing to do is see if you can fix that one bass part. I sometimes get an unwanted interaction between a reverb and an instrument, so that's something to look at. If it can't be fixed directly, you could just narrow-Q sweep for it and take it down directly. Once that extra bass energy is tamed, you should get a better interaction with the compression on the mix.

The lead guitar needs to come up in the mix on both songs. Everything else sounds good to me. Just don't bring the lead guitar out in front of the vocals or to far up on the other guitar. Nice jams and good mix on the rest.

Peace and blessings, John

As a starting point whith heavy distorted guitars i use a waves puigchild compressor with about 7db's of gain reduction and 7 dbs of make up gain and this may vary a little. Then i use a DMG Equilibrium EQ. I usually start out with a cut at 300Hz with a wide bandwith and a cut at 4000KHz with a much more narrow bandwith. The 300Hz cut may vary from 250 to 600Hz, just depends on the guitars. After u play around with the amount of cuts on the EQ you should be able to balance out the guitars with the rest of the mix but they should cut through alot better (slap u upside the head)!!

thanks DUDE!!! (how many times have i said that in my life!?).  I don't have those plugs,  but I would think using the plugs I have will get me started. Thanks so much. that is exactly the type of example and feedback i was hoping to get. I will give it a try tonight and let you know.  Do you have any music posted?

Dude: I gave your suggestions a try and I think it made a difference. I think I am losing some of my perspective on the mix, I have head it many many time in the last week. I will respost tonight.

That was the hardest thing i've had to learn is that sometimes u just have to give your ears some rest! It's still very hard for me!
Yes i have 2 songs in the songs forum. Its not me playing but i mixed and mastered them. They are What I Want and All The Same.
I'm glad to hear that u might be getting close to a sound you're looking for!
