Purple Rhapsody
Hi,

https://soundcloud.com/pu...ody/on-the-piano-cloud

I composed a piano duet a couple of months ago and started transcribing it for someone else to play with me... but didn't manage to transcribe it in time for the other person to play it and so I recorded it myself! Playing a duet with myself was very difficult without it sounding too mechanical so hopefully I've managed to retain the amount of emotion I put into my solo piano music.

This is the first track from my next piano album (called Interludes and Epiphanies) - I had every intention of releasing an album of 'orchestra/piano/rock fusion' this year (and I may still) but my muse has been directing me down a path of 'pure piano' recently and so I've got an album of piano music coming along instead!

I hope you enjoy it - any advice on how to master similar tracks in future (with such highs and lows in them!) are most welcome.

Cheers,
Terry.

Wow - thanks for such positive replies guys. Thanks for taking the time to listen and comment.

Mark - Thanks!

Scott - I abhor flat waveforms, this one does have a pleasing variation in it! ;-)

John - thanks, much appreciated

Shad - thanks! Although the performance would have been better if I hadn't had to play in exact time to a metronome for most of it...

Thanks again to everyone that's listened so far.

Cheers,
Terry.

Heheh, I know the feeling. It is not easy to play with yourself... errr... wait.. that does not sound good... Robby will jump all over that... um... to be both or all performers on a song. Maybe try to make the 'metronome' more natural sounding by using a humanized click track next time.

Just in case anyone's interested, this is an *actual* rhapsody that 'Purple Rhapsody' has composed here: "a one-movement work that is episodic yet integrated, free-flowing in structure, featuring a range of highly contrasted moods, colour and tonality. An air of spontaneous inspiration and a sense of improvisation make it freer in form than a set of variations."

Highly effective use of the form!

I'm actually most intrigued by the live performance potential here. If there's any chance you can get the second pianist on board, one way to approach it would be as blending composition and improvisation.

Once both of you know the framework inside and out, you can start to take off on it, each one introducing a new wrinkle on the spot, and following the other's ideas as well.

This could be a VERY dramatic live duet!
