Here is a new product from Sampletekk. Its a deep sampled DX7 electric piano.
  • Kontakt, HALion, EXS24 and SFZ formats included. (Full Kontakt needed).
The inclusion of SFZ will appeal to those who do not have the full version of Kontakt.

The demos sound pretty good and its cheap enough, as its included in the current Sampletekk summer sale, and there is an extra discount for existing customers.

But do I need a sampled DX7 ePiano when I have FM8?

No. You don't need a sampled dx7 when you owned fm8. There are lots of free dx7 patches on the net that can be converted into fm8. I had managed to find many varieties of FM electric piano patches. Fm8 is probably the best dx7 emulation out there. I had played a dx7 before in the eighties. Fm8 should have similar dynamic range to dx7. I am not sure a multi velocity sampled dx7 could even come close to that.

Thanks, It was a rehtorical question really. This is probably a very nice product (Sampletekk's stuff is invarably good) but its goining to be limited compared to a good emulation of a DX7. Something it will have in common with most (all?) sampled synths.

I think this version of the question might be more appropriate.

Of course, my dislike of this sound has to do with it being used on every single terrible ballad made between 83 and 90 (or so).  I'd be open to hearing any examples of that sound being used for good and not evil, though.

I prefer to use such things in "stacks" of keyboard sounds...particularly with dark, phat, chorused Rhodes sounds. Adds the perfect amount of "sparkle".

IMO, nobody needs a DX7 piano emulation.

I hated that instrument back when every Top 40 tune had to have one in it, and the pianos were particularly annoying.

That Wurly, OTOH...now there's a classic sound I'll never tire of. Twenty bucks for returning customers.

This page starts with a list of "20 sounds that must die" as presented in Keyboard Magazine in 1995.

The DX Piano is at #7.  Behind 808 drum sounds, but ahead of Orchestral Hit and Shakuhachi.
