  • Bapu, Danny, Dave and Phil Roll Out a New Rocker: “I Ain’t Workin’ No More”

I started writing this tune several years ago when I first got it into my head to retire.  The first 2 verses literally rolled off my tongue then, bam… nothing.  On 12/15/12 I finally did retire, and I finally finished the song too.  It’s a simple little tune, but it rocks along pretty good with the help of my friends and collaborators.

Danny Danzi- Lead Guitar, Spiritual & Production Guidance
Dave (QuantumEffect) Carlson- Drums
Ed (Bapu) Kocol- Bass, Backing Vocals and Production
Phil (Philz) Doyle- Lead Vocal, Rhythm Guitar & Piano

As always, all comments: good bad or indifferent on any aspect are welcomed.  Hope y’all like it.

Please note- The song does contain a few expletives, so if you have little kids in the room, you may want to want to usher them out or hold off listening.

You people are about to piss me off! Posting music I feel compelled to listen to? And comment on? While I'm trying to watch TV, I'm so sick of this shiz... I may not listen no more?!? I'm so tired... All I want is to be left alone!

That MIDI bass sounds pretty good! Is that Spectrasonics? :-)

Good job on this one! (except for that lame arse MIDI bass!) LOL!

I really did enjoy, to be honest I still liked the other version but this is still awesome and Danny's solo was the highlight of it for me. Great job

First - let me congratulate you on the retirement - I retired in June of 2011. Upon my retirement I immediately drew a complete blank on music - nothing new for about six months. Anyway - this is killer - you guys are so good together. Sometimes a straight forward, simple rocker like that is as good as music can get - just fantastic.

Congratulations on your retirement. The guitar tone in the solo was harsh and really didn't seem like it fit the song but I guess that's the risk you take when the guitarist has such a cliche style. It starts out OK but goes downhill at the 2:05 mark when it seems like he's trying to figure out how to fit in an excessive amount of notes. Again, it the cliche style and the idea the the more notes the better. A positive though, it's nice to hear Bapu play more than three different notes in a song.

phil i really like your vocals, you got a gritty voice, and i can almost see you smiling singing this song...lol..congrats on retirement
Exspecially the end where you say...Yeaaaaaaaaa.

bapu's bass is right in my face,i love it.there is one thing ive learned to appreciate about ed's bass playing is he carry's a tune.
and only a good bass player can do that, trust me i know, because by nature,i am a bass player.
im not sure i could give ed a higher compliment then that.

Danny guitar licks, maybe pete is hearing alot of notes, what i hear is modes,i hear the scales, the melodic flow of his lead progressions, thay are amazing.

If i were to start a band tommorow and someone let me pick all my own members,my first choice would be a guitarist and it would be danzi.
he's the type of person that has the ability to change the whole sound of a song with out re-arranging rythm passages.

the drummer never gets any love..
i will say this, the drums sounded really good, the kick and snare fit right in the mix nicely,my first listen they sounded a low in the mix.
second listen..they're right where they should be.

catchy tune.
if your looking for for advise on things to do better....i got nothing.
loved it !

I guess some people are more impressed by quantity of notes as opposed to quality of notes.

What did stand out too in the solo was that it sounded so thin. I think maybe it's the GB25s, but brother, the tone sounds like it's eminating from a telephone speaker. My constructive criticism for Danny would be to try not to shove a milllion notes into the solo, try to plan ahead and be more deliberate about what you are going to say in a solo. In the middle of this one it seems like there was point where the solo became lost for a moment and then randomly scurried off in a different direction. Planning will help with this. I would also would suggest cutting down on the bite on the tone and fattening it up a bit. The edge on the tone was like fingernails on a chalklboard. It would sound a lot better if the solo were more appropriate for the style of the song too. This one had a nice bluesy groove to it and a more melodic solo would fit better.

I did think overall Phil did a great job with the song though.

The solo mapping was just fine and it has an appropriate amount of notes for this tune (I counted them and cross referenced with my "Acceptable Amount of Notes" chart). The style and tone are slightly out of place but this is a crunchy old style rocker and Danny's a very polished player. It'd be like having Steve Vai do a solo on a George Thorogood song. Of course it's gonna stick out a little. The moral of the story is... Pete, don't be an arse.

To Philz and gang. Strikes me you guys were going for a fun rocker. Mission accomplished. ;-)

Hi Phil,

Congrats on the retirement and on this tribute to leaving the rat race!

The vocal is perfect. Sweet guitar solo and excellent playing from everyone.
