Hi,
I've got a new song out. It's called "Between a place and a hard rock" - you can check it out here:
http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=12277210

It features the usual cast of characters, but gives a chance for my bass player,
Mr Trilian, to take a little solo on the acoustic bass ;-)

It's all done on SONAR X2.

As usual, all comments gratefully accepted (good or bad) ;-)

Very, very different. I don't know what genre this would go into either. Like I said very, very different. You did accomplish time for your bass player and he did a great job with this strange piece. Different but actually not to bad, but needs some work.

Peace and blessings, John

Thanks for listening John.

You do know that the bass is just the Trilian synth right?

but needs some work
What parts don't you like?

You look awful young in that picture, you sure your dad knows your playing this wild and psychedelic music?
Seriously I really liked several of your songs on soundclick, very creative and the sounds and effects are well placed. The mix and sound quality are pro, I can only wish. I don't want to give away my generation but this has broad appeal. I'm still new at using Sonar, midi keyboard, and bunch other stuff I still don't fully know how or what it does. But when I hear music like yours I can see whats out there.
When I lay tracks for backing, I can not get the bass track to sound genuine, sounds like it comes from the keyboard (Broomstick, Cakewalk). I notice you said you used Trilian Synth, any other tricks with it? Sounds excellent and real, I need that. I considered getting a bass guitar, but I have very short fingers, hard enough to play my guitar, but every bass I've tried the frets are too far apart, maybe if I use my toes. Would love honest feedback on my last two pieces, especially vol mix, can't hurt my feelings so bring it on. thanks captg

Thanks for your feedback Capt. Without giving away my generation (I'm old) it took me a long time to learn how to get the bass part right. I don't know broomstick bass - but I think it's pretty good. Trilian is wonderful and I just take my time and work out good bass lines (on a keyboard) and then pay special attention to mixing it to fit in with the kick drum. I've slowly learned how to get the frequencies to sit right, and of course it's a never ending learning curve.

My advice would be to just listen to good bass lines and practice playing them on the keyboard.

I'll go listen to your stuff tomorrow (or Mon) and get back to you - but in the meantime, thanks for listening, and getting in touch.

John - I think this is genius. You have a great talent - good imagination - play well. What more can I say - I love this.

Hey CaptainG -
Sadguitar - I really like this! If you want a hint for the bass, follow the kick drum. (IMHO) it wants to go da da, da, da da...
Hey, at the end - (around 3:48) it's starting to do that.

The song is excellent though. I'd do a cover if it wasn't plagery ;-)

You Cool - Well, I like the other one better. This one could maybe use a bass line with some action in it ;-)
Still, this one has potential too ;-)

Reminds me of our old friend No How, who wrote similarly accessible groovy off-kilterness. The bass sounds great. I would vary the velocities here and there if you want a more convincing "real" bass.

This takes me back to my garage band days when we would jam stuff like this for hours.  It is evocative of an era, and made me feel nostalgic.  Nice job.
