The freaking printer kept saying "check connection." But the router is working fine. The WiFi is working fine. My phone connects to it. I scanned something to an email a week ago, I'm sure of it. What's changed since then? So I'm going through the manual. Resetting the router. Even went through all the kerfuffle of setting up the wireless connection on the printer (now where did I put that WiFI password?) and you know how fiddly and annoying that can be. 
 
Lots of swearing tonight. Lots. 
 
And I'm just about to call the Brother helpline, when it occurs to me that my desktop PC doesn't even have WiFi. It's my LAPTOP that handles all that WiFi/printer crap.

Same. I actually disabled the wireless portion of my router, on purpose, because even a nasty password can get broken these days. Cable goes to the office, feeds 2 computers, wired the wall for internet, third wire goes through wall to the music machines. And if I use my laptop I just stretch the wire from it to the back of the router.
 
I have found the WI-FI stuff over rated, and not as secure, and the number of attempts for folks to break into it, is a waste of time, and effort and hassle.

I only have WiFi for the printer and my laptop. I'm not worried about security but I do turn it off when I'm not using it, mainly because I'm not 100% certain that sitting for hours next to a WiFi router is healthy. I must say being able to put the printer where it's most convenient without having to worry about USB cables is a boon. 

You spend over an hour doing that?

I lived with an admin (now making 130K a year!!!!!) that always had the setup at home on wires. I asked him one time why, and he was a bit evasive, and as knowledgeable as he is (security is his strength), he does not even use wireless for his printer.
 
I trust his knowledge! he took an ISP from 2400 to 24,000 in the span of about 7 to 8 years!  And no one knew the mail server and network like he did! There had to be a good reason, and I think it was security based. Because he was an admin, and would hook up to the various units on the main locations, I think the security of what he did was more important than the ease, and whatever a wireless this or that had to offer! That's the way I always interpreted it.
