Music has always been a great unifying force. i would say sports and music are probably the things people find easiest to put their differences aside for, at least temporarily.
Are you kidding??? Try putting a Liverpool fan next to a Man U fan, or a Michigan State fan next to an Ohio State fan, or...
As for music, I remember the fights between punks and rockers, rock and country, Disco and everyone else...
No, I'm not kidding. yes, i know people fight over music and sports. people have been stabbed over all manner of silly things. just because 100% of the population will not unify over such things does no change the fact that each has a much better track record than such things as politics. I bet you i have much better luck getting two random people to find some common ground on music than politics. People do fight over music and sports, but white, gun toting, bible thumping republicans have no problem playing a blues jam session with a black, al sharpton loving democrats. yes, OSU and Michigan fans hate each other, but on the flipside, occupy wall street hippy types from michigan and Corporate Mitt Romney types will unify in cheering against OSU. It's far from perfect and there is a completely ugly side to it, but i like ,my chances of pairing random people via music or sports over tossing out a subject like abortion.
