  • Can I throw away old versions of NI software?

I am actually trying to clean up the software case and there are some things taking space that I would love to throw away.

I have boxed copies of Kontakt 2, Kontakt 4 update, Kontakt 5 update, Komplete 9 crossgrade from one of the Kontakts, Komplete 10 update, and Komplete 10 ultimate upgrade.

Which, if any, do you think would be safe to s***can?  If I ever had to reload anything surely I could do it from the Latest Komplete 10u since the serials are already registered? Not sure if anyone has been through this but thought I would check for bad or good experiences.

I checked service center and I see the Kontakt 4 stand alone listed separately but Kontakt 5 is also listed with the Komplete versions...

I don't clean very often but when I do I'm a tosser!

Regards,
Rick

The different versions of Kontakt exist as independent entities, and not all versions are needed for sake of simplification..

So far, older libraries are forward compatible, but not always backward compatible.

Can leave older versions of the Kontakt engine on the disc, but all you need is the most recent. No need to have Kontakt 4 if you have ver 5.

Ver 5 will pick up the ver 4 and before libraries as well as any 3rd party stuff. Fully support cleaning out the redundant clutter.

The boxes you can always get rid of, just keep backups of the data on a disk/remote storage.

However with Komplete, it is a good idea to keep older versions as they discontinue things, for whatever reason. Sometimes they decide they are tired of selling a product and stop. You'd think they'd keep it around, since they already made it, but no. So you need that old version if you want to install the product.

A good example is their pianos. Komplete 10 introduced some new, nice pianos. Cool. However they decided to stop including the pianos they had previously put in the pack, starting with Komplete 7. Now while some might argue the new ones are so superior you don't need the old ones, maybe you want that particular sound, or maybe you have an old project that uses them.

No need to have Kontakt 4 if you have ver 5.

Not entirely true in my case. When I un-installed 4 and then opened a project that required it, 4 was NOT replaced with 5. Inserting 5 was the answer but my settings for 4 were not known to 5.

Proceed with caution when deleting 4 I say.

Kontakt 4 library won't appear in Kontakt 5 from what i've been told...

Keep the programs installed cuz they don't take up much room but keep the libraries on an external drive so you have them if you need them. Easy to make a new path to the libraries.

Hmm...

Not my experience at all, but now you guys got me paranoid...

Installed complete 7 some years back on win XP, full install taking hours.
Bought the complete 9 upgrade and got the screen of death that win 7 and above needed. Didn't read the fine print. My win XP rig was toast.

Was able to go into the individual msi installers and got Kontakt 5 and Guitar Rig 5 installed, but nothing else, no libraries, no synths.

A parallel hard drive on the XP unit has all the Kontakt 4 library installations, factory and third party.

I did have a temporary glitch with Vintage synths and Vintage organs. It took a couple restarts to get them recognized, and I had to manually point Kontak 5 to each of the ver 4 factory libraries to get them registered.

Otherwise, every library from Kontakt 7 Complete is fully recognized and functional. GUI intact, scripting working without flaw, as deep as I've gotten into it. Third party libraries working. Kontakt 4 was no longer needed because Kontakt 5 picked up everything from the previous installation perfectly. No problems rock solid.

Maybe some disaster I escaped by circumventing the win XP to win 7 transition, because looks like others are obviously having problems.  What did I miss?...
