@ blipp, Lynn, CLEAN, ohgrant and mstodge: Thank you for your words of encouragement. This recording project is finished and I've gotten to the point where I can barely listen to it anymore, so it's great to hear that the music hits the mark.
@sharke: Jim's bass, a Yamaha 6-string John Pattitucci (not the greatest instrument) was tracked either through a UA 710 Twin Finity or a Grace 101 preamp. I gave it a little EQ bump at around 250 and I gave the kick a little cut in the same area. I used a UAD DBX160 compressor at a 3:1 ratio with no more than 5 dB gain reduction. I think that Ray Ferretti would tell you that he was reaching into his Holdsworth bag on this track.
At Leizer and Psalmist35: I share your enthusiasm for Justo Almario. What you are hearing is the first take! The first part of the blowing changes are weird and difficult to navigate, at least for mortals. I thought I was going to trip him up a bit. Maybe next time ;-D He is THAT good!
Cheers,
J
