Am I missing something? What happened to Windows-9?

Nope, still not seeing it. Windows 8 works perfectly smoothly for me and I haven't had one single problem with it.

And that is wonderful it works for YOU, however the GENERAL consensus is it sucks and is equal in  crappyness to Vista, or do you not agree with the majority of windoze users experience?

Although 8.1 seems to have placated the Win8 noise I have still been waiting for the upcycle release which I'm hoping this will turn out to be.

As in every second release from MS is usually their bizzarro experimental release to gauge how stupid they can get, then they listen to the backlash said stupidity causes and then release a proper OS that stands the test of time.

I have been wanting to get a new laptop for a while but even if I had the money for one I did not want to deal with Win8... at all. I've never even used it but it strikes me as the "downcycle" like Vista, ME, etc. Win7 has been working absolutely fine for me. I would however like some of the under the hood performance enhancements reported for 8 but based on past experience figured I could get those along with a more sane interface.

Time will tell of course but I'm hoping this will be the "good" release on par with 95, XP or 7. I do however expect to wait for at least one service pack.

That General Consencus is an arse though, he don't know nothin. I know this because an old chum of his, Major Influence, told me so.

I agree that now I can turn off the stoopid charm bar Win 8 is actually fine and better in many ways than 7.

I should clarify... I'm sure 8.1 is fine and Vista was, in the end, fine but I don't like having to fiddle with the OS more than I have to. Vista was too drastically different from XP in how things were done (and it used to actually freeze on me all the time which ticked me off... I think it hated me as much as I hated it). 7 was more like XP and God Mode fixed any remaining bullpizerry associated with having to hunt around for stuff.

8 supposedly required skins and tweaks to make it work and was another crappy scenario where programmers were trying to make things all "touchy" and Star Trekky. I did not want to deal with that and I still think that programmers need to either make a completely separate release for touchscreen crap (which I would never use on any of my serious systems) or have a pure desktop mode.

I think about 80-90% (or more) of the problems I had with Sonar X2 (which were many and sent me into a tailspin around here) were directly due to the implementation of touch and Cakewalk trying to make Sonar Win8 ready before MS had actually released 8 (aside from the demo version which was obviously fuxxored).

That is not the "general consensus" at all. And quite frankly some of the butt hurt surrounding Windows 8 borders on the hysterical. Like having to click to get onto the desktop upon startup. Yeah I'd change this, but on my (rational) scale of life annoyances it doesn't even register. Others have made such a big deal about how much this inconveniences them that I feel like grabbing them by the scruff of the neck, frog marching them onto a plane to Africa and showing them some REAL problems.

My (objective, non-hysterical) evaluation of Windows 8 is that it is very slick, fast, looks good and has given me a slightly more stable Sonar experience. If I had the slightest problem with it then believe me, I'd say. I suspect that much of the butt hurt surrounding the OS consists of people who like to jump on bandwagons.

Even more interesting than the free Windows 10 upgrade is the fact that MS is offering it to people running pirated versions of Win 7 and Win 8. Take that pirates. Wiped out by the simple expedient of giving the treasure away. Well it worked for IE (anyone remember Netscape Navigator) so why not Windows. Of course, Windows 10 will be like Sonar in the future, a constantly updated mutual commitment that will require phoning home on a regular basis for authorization. So in the end they will have better control of the product than they do now. And rather than virtually giving it away to hardware manufacturers, and watching most of the revenue go to them as people buy new machines rather than updating Windows, they apparently plan to make money offering "services" that will use Windows as a gateway, and collecting user data. That model worked so well for AOL.

Interesting, I will tell our office of technology and help desk they are full of butt hurt since they will not  deploy win 8 because it does NOT work with some of  our apps..

and if win 8 is all that great, why did win 10 come out so quickly and do an about face with the cutsie swipe krap.

Anyway you like it , I and many others don't , my Sonar is very stable on win 7 so each is different
AFA win 10 I rolled back since some ham radio apps didnt play well on it, but in fairness its still beta.

So we both derailed from the original topic.
I wont change your mind, nor do i wish to, and you wont change a great number of others..

I'm good. If I can get it free I may consider a dual boot but I'll be where I am until Jim gives the OK. I think I still have a copy of Windows ME somewhere just in case.
