Firefrost - no drums

______________________________________________________________________________

Hi folks,

Here's the latest piece from my on-going 'Weirdstone' project.

Firefrost

Very pleased to have 2 special guests on this one, Ed Kocol (Bapu) on bass and Terry Robinson (Purple Rhapsody) on piano. Both provided excellent tracks, and just what I was after. Thanks guys!

Nice tune.

I have to ask, I get a slight sense of hesitation at the transition to the snare/brushes from the Bohran, other than that sounds good here.

thanks for sharing.

Hmmm, a nice three way collaboration there guys.  Good interplay between instruments and nice transitions.  I liked the way it moved along.  Good job, fellas.

I cannot say I like this song at all. Musically or mix wise.

Given my admiration for the people involved I find myself somewhat distressed at giving this review. I have sat here thinking about why I feel the way I do. I think it is because of expectation. I know what each of you can produce, but more importantly I know WHAT you have produced. That is maybe why I find this dissonant mentally. It is a very big departure.

Having just heard a couple of very clear and tight songs, coming into this one was a bit of a shock. It is very muddy and lifeless. I am used to much better mixes from you James. The bass in particular is dull sounding. The guitar tones were sweet, but the drums were imbalanced in range. The piano was cold.

Musically, I do not know if Terry and Ed improvised, or of you provided them with music, but the only part I like musically was the guitar. There were a few moments with the bass that showed promise, and I kept hoping Ed would go more with it, but then he would pull back into this rather risk free pattern. Terry's piano was church lady - also devoid of risk or passion. Given how much passion and emotion I have heard him express musically, this was just so saccharin as to cause me to wonder if it actually is Terry.

Did you scare them or something James? .

Gosh I really do not like having to say these words to you guys. I could, I suppose just have said "good job"and be done with it, but I find that everybit as dishonest as telling an outright lie.

That's quite nice.  Great tone on the guitar solo - This tune is it's transporting me back in time a bit - oh now I remember - this is reminding me of some of Shawn Lane's Power of 10 album.  You've got some nice textures going on.
