thanks for listening, i appreciate it

thank you for checking out a 'coustic thing......
i actually bought those little bongos to play on this song,
and have used them quite a bit since.
it's tricky to get the mic just right for those things....
you have to be very strict about the way you lay into them, or they overpower the mic.

still learningn how to play them.....

'careless' arrangements....
yes, i really like that idea.

it's more free.....
the idea is, if you can capture the vibe, without having to box it in...
that's the goal.

that way, you are somewhat bucking up against 'the status quo'....
and as far as songwriting goes, i think i'd rather be known for not falling into 'industry standard'.
if you know what i mean.

it's a great way to put it...

because this arrangement really was free form...

i recorded one track of guitar riff, freely, with no metronome or click or anything creating any patterns.....
i performed the entire track, then went back and re-learned what i did, and just continued tracking on top of it.

it truely was, a 'careless arrangment'!

thanks band!
funny, that YES thing pops up pretty often..
but really zero influence, i guess it's just certain tones and riffs that key peoples' memories of yes tunes.
i don't know.
but thanks for listening!

i'm always working on 'tones'.
heheh

i mean, really, a riff is cool and all, but if you can get it to say something inside the choice of tone..
which means, the way you pick it, the velocity of the attack, the choice of strings that day, the choice of microphone and front end gear chain....
all that.....
then the riff becomes something a bit... more.
that's what i'm looking for.

Hi BB. whatever you're doing to achieve your tone, it works : )  99% is in your fingers though , you've got a very recognisable tone.

Yes indeed!  Excellent all the way around.  I agree with the others that your playing is excellent but your vocals are terrific also.  Good work indeed.

thanks man.
you are always so encouraging....
i'll try posting a few more of my acoustic things....

rikkie
thanks rik!
yeah, tone is kinda in the fingers, i know what you mean.
but i can play the same parts on my seagull, then the taylor, and it's obvious that the taylor has got a LOT more going on in the sonics...

i guess quality instruments just let you get more OUT of them.....
the sound takes on more tone..
and even in a cheap or quick recording, you can hear the diff......

freddy J
thanks for the kudos on the vox...
that's what i work on the most.
there's a lot i DON'T like about my vox....
but they are serviceable enough.....

Sounds more like Night Ranger or Styx than Yes.

Just kidding. That is some sweet stuff, Gonz. I like your 70s approach of putting the vocals way back in the mix...very tasty.

heheh......
night ranger..... makes me think of mid 80's.....
and styx, makes me think of real late 70's......
Yes, makes me think of 1969-71.
LOL

i guess the idea with the vocal mix, is to put it right where it ought to be.

not annoyingly loud and up front...
and not buried.
but just.... right between the ears, in the cans, and you can still hear the room in the track,
hopefully gives it a more live vibe.

i might try recording some vox without the headphones....
track to monitors at volume, with the unidirectional opposite of the speakers, see what happens.
i've been meaning to try that for a long time.....
it's funny, i can solo the vocal tracks, and hear the background music picking up from the headphones anyway.....
