I am sorry Ed. Robby's version just sounds cleaner, more intimate and emotive. The issue for me is twofold.
1. Your mix just too busy. Everything is stepping on everything else. You need to make space.
2. You are trying to be fair. - This may strike you as an odd thing for me to say, but let me explain what I mean:
It sounds to me that you wish to be true to Gary's vision, and are trying to not put any one part "ahead" of another in the mix. The problem is, this is not what the song requires.
Robby gave the song what it requires (though the mix during the second half needs a lot of work to clear up some mud and return the detail of the first half). The vocals on his version are out front where they should be. They are warm and rich. Please Ed, listen carefully to Robby's arrangement and try to learn from it. I know this is not about competition, but it can be a very good learning tool, if you let it be.
