STEAM can be...

Valve's monopolistic online games store.

Spectrasonics' synthesiser sound engine.

Water vapour.

There seems to be a serious gamer contingent in the Cake programmer community. There is actually a page on this site dedicated to some cosmic online RPG that I'd never heard of until I stumbled across it by accident while searching for something else (sounded cool but the name is eluding me now).

Fact is us home audio nerds have to really thank the PC gamer community for keeping the ultra high spec desktop components available at reasonable prices. They seem to be the majority of folks dropping enough cash on high end MOBOs and other parts to keep the desktops alive. If it were up to the average Joe Schmoe we'd all be recording on our phones by now.

When I built my system all my research pretty much led me to gaming stuff and if you look at companies like ADK they also build gaming systems (and that's probably where most of their cash comes from).

This is quite accurate Beeps. When I built my DAW, my research was also done at gaming sites as well as here at Cake. My MOBO is actually a gaming board designed by a guy who apparently broke some world records in OCing his MOBO using liquid nitrogen (or something like that). I've been fortunate to build a very stable DAW/Gaming machine, but have been gaming a bit more than recording.

I'm also a reagular Steam user and generally only buy games there, but I've seen a lot of Cake products on sale there. If you're buying games on Steam, the best time is when they have their seasonal promo's (usually summer & Christmas holidays)......you can get some of the best games for around 75% off the regular price. Good to know people in here like to game as well......if anyone's upto playing TF2 (free shooter game with great game mechanics....), just add me to your friends list and we'll hook up: I'm Meshodman (on Steam).

Zonno
I used to be Zonno on Steam, nowadays my kids have hostaged my Steam account.
Reason I will not buy SONAR through steam is that my kids will see my SONAR stats and my SONAR chats and my SONAR friends......
and I don't want to be invited to play Opposing Forces while I'm recording music.

Don't hook up with me on Steam....

Can you get Sonar achievements on Steam? :-p

Ah, I see the Valve commitment to strict QA procedures continues:

The correct price is shown if you click through, I wonder if they could be held to that under false advertisement law?

not really, more a case of selective reading... much like adam & joe when into a corner shop and decided to drink the "10% free" on a drink , much to the annoyance of the shop keeper.

I have mixed feelings regarding distro digitally.. I was forced to buy a rival products upgrade direct from them.. but if I had bought it in a real shop the "whole version" upgrade would have been cheaper. I would still like to go to a local music shop, but sadly DV went bust and it's pretty much online only now.

I think the "defense" argument will claim that those prices were expressed in Neptunian pounds instead of the British variety. In their attempt to display prices in your local currency, they started off narrowing the search down to the right solar system. Subsequent pages were slightly more accurate.

If that fails, they'll distract everyone by installing a patch for the next 72 hours. At least, that's been my experience.
