  • How do they practice this sort of thing without killing themselves?

Not exactly a new video, but I still watch it from time to time and wonder how in the hell you become insane enough to do stuff like this.

I remember doing some really stupid stuff on a bike when I was young (Evil Knievel was big back then) which resulted in at least one broken nose, lots of stitches and at least one concussion.  But the highest drop that I ever accidentally went down was maybe 13-18 feet after I missed a turn and went straight.  I woke up on the road that runs around the local lake with two joggers looking down and asking me if I was alright.  Had to walk my broken bike home about 2 miles before my Mom took one look at me and rushed me to the hospital - lol.

All of that said, we NEVER did anything close to the insanity that they do now (and on that clip).  However, I do know how they learn some of it.  They go off jumps, do their flips and then land into a huge "pool" of soft foam.  I've seen it - actually looked like a lot of fun to be honest.

Insane? Yeah! That course looked difficult to navigate, I was waiting for him to hit a bystander. Ahh heck that course looked so treacherous I'd have trouble just walking along it without sliding off the edge and into the abyss!

looks like he lost it a bit at 1:27..... yeah that's crazy....

I used to ride my motorcycle in the dirt at a place we called "The Pits" in  Blackwood NJ. Lots of trails in the woods and a large area with dirt jumps and some pretty steep hills and cliffs. You ride, fall, get up, do it again.... learn how fast you can take the jumps and cliffs..... and keep doing it.  I had to ride a bit tamer than the others since the bike I had at the time was a 250 Yamaha street bike, not a knobby tire dirt bike.....I still had fun but kept off the motocross at the higher speeds.

Extreme sports have come a long ways....and that has to be one tough bike frame to handle that and not fold up....

I'd probably wet my pants just trying to walk down that thing let alone on a bike...Are you kidding me?  I'd be dead in the first 10 seconds.... It would take me 2 seconds to go over the edge and 8 more until I hit the rocks below....

I've seen that before but it still makes my butt whole pucker every time I see it!! I'm not afraid of heights, I'm afraid of falling from them.

It's not the fall, it's the sudden stops that hurt.

That's cool. I had to repost it on FB for a friend of mine who likes mountain biking and climbing. Oh, he's also a drummister.

The skills required to walk a tightrope one foot off the ground are the same skills required to do it at 100 feet up. The confidence the performer has in those skills, and his ability to ignore the consequences of failure differ. Two basic types of people can manage the mind trick. There are people who simply do not have the fear response we consider normal, and there are people who get a near orgasmic reaction to fear, which has the quality of an addiction. A "normal" person can master the same kind of mind trick with practice and focused attention--but why would he?
