How does everyone manage keeping up to date?

I have several DAWS, a gazillion plugins and stuff. How do you manage it all. Then of course making sure the new stuff works and doesn't mess up your system. Some plugins have a "check for update" option but this isn't a standard feature.

It's a long tedious process.

Every day I run my online installers 3 times...morning, afternoon, and evening.
I regularly also go through my plugin list and load the plugin and, if it has a
check for updates option I run that.  Otherwise it's off to website to find the current
version and make sure it/s what I'm using.

Which makes me thankful for the companies that notify you of updates.

So you saying you never update unless it's to fix something?

generally, i don't "just update", yes... for one i don't have the time, and if the tools do the jobs they're supposed to then why would i? currently i'm mid-way through a leisurely migration to a new lappy and i'm surprising myself at what i'm not missing... whoever needs "the very latest" anything? that's so silly...

if it ain't broke, fix it 'til it is!

Let me know when you get a bunch of those tools that just work and don't need some fixes. Lol

seems like a stability question? but so far i've installed (useful/stable/convenient authorisation) so you might infer that these "just work lol" (at least for what i do):

presonus studio one 2 & updated to 3, ableton live 9/max 6, 112db eq & reverb, audio damage plugs, big tick rhino, blaukraut charlatan, bluearp, cakewalk z3ta+2, celemony melodyne, ddmf plugs, gforce mtron pro & minimonsta, gvst plugs, kirnu cream, martinic plugs, nomad factory isp plugs , ni, only reaktor & monark so far, plug'n'mix plugs, sknote plugs, sonimus plugs, stillwell plugs, toneboosters plugs, u-he plugs...

still on the todo list: voxengo, psp, discodsp, ni kontakt/guitar rig, wavearts, dmg, camel, linplug, korg, izotope, xils...

what will be installed next....?

now i'm not saying none of these have bugs, though i'm not hitting them, but at the same time don't fall for the "all software has bugs" blah because, while true-ish, bugs are usually there because of commercial development pressures and decisions, not because bugs are inherent to all software

AD2 or example works, and always has for me. I found their was an update, and ran it from the installer. Then AD2 vanished form Sonar. Can't recall what I did to fix it, but I stumbled on a solution blindly and quickly, so no problem. When I had a look at the details, the update wasn't doing anything for my system, so didn't need to run it. So I'm in the 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it camp' Look for updates when something is not looking right. Sonar for instance is broke, so I run them every release. Rapture Pro is working for me, so I'll look at the fixes, but being a new release I'll probably run as it's likely to hold important stuff either way.

I don't really have a stack of stuff though, Applied Acoustic Systems and XLN are my main ones. So not much to keep track off really, I think they both email me too, AAS does.

Best to keep an eye out early on if it's a new plug-in/DAW as there will be fixes. That's common sense.

Must admit, I tend to do it if I see it or just on the off chance. I buy a lot secondhand, so it's usually gone through the cycle of updates. One install and update and it should be close to being up to date.

A lot of companies now email major update reminders. I think they all should do that anyway. It's in their interest to do so.

One advantage of still being on XP is that you can't update anything as it's nearly all for later versions and your system will combust if you try. I'd celebrate but I'm still trying to start my PC with a crank handle.
